Friends of the Nature, People, and Forest (FNPF) is an Indonesian conservation nonprofit organization working to protect wildlife and their habitat, at the same time as supporting local communities. Our projects are holistic and sustainable, respecting respect the interdependence of wildlife, habitat, and these communities. Our work has been recognized by global organizations including the United

Nations Development Programme, the Whitley Fund for Nature, and the Rainforest Action Network. All over Indonesia, native birds are under threat of extinction because of poaching and wildlife trading. The country has the second-highest number of threatened birds in the world. It is also estimated that Indonesia has lost more than 72% of its primary forest and that deforestation is occurring at a rate of 2.4 million hectares – that is an area more than twice the size of the Caribbean island of Jamaica – a year. To help tackle these issues FNPF runs projects in Bali and Kalimantan, including wildlife rehabilitation, the breeding, and release of critically endangered birds, habitat protection, reforestation, and agroforestry – agriculture integrated with the cultivation and conservation of trees. Our community development work includes environmental education, teaching sustainable ways to make a living such as ecotourism and organic farming, and reducing reliance on illegal logging and palm oil plantations, major factors in deforestation. What if conservation success is not only about science—but also about culture?

We are proud to share our latest research published in Oryx highlights how Bali starling conservation in Besikalung Wildlife Sanctuary is strengthened by something often overlooked: local belief systems.

From nest box strategies to breeding outcomes, science plays a key role.
But what truly sustains protection is the integration of:

• Awig-awig (customary law enforcing protection)
• Tri Hita Karana (harmony between people, nature, and spirituality)

This combination has helped create a safe environment where Bali starlings can breed and thrive—even outside their typical habitat.

This is what community-based conservation looks like in practice.

February 21 was World Pangolin Day.

Pangolins are closer to us than we think, and they are very important for our environment. They are the only mammals covered in scales, and they help keep ecosystems balanced by eating thousands of ants and termites every night. Without pangolins, insect populations can explode, harming crops and forests, and the natural balance of our habitats can be disturbed.

Sadly, pangolins are one of the most trafficked animals in the world. Their scales are made of keratin, just like human nails, and have no proven medical value. Yet illegal hunting continues to threaten their survival.

If you see a pangolin, do not touch, chase, feed, or move it. Keep a safe distance and report it:

1.Note the location and number of pangolins.
2.Contact BKSDA BALI +62 853-3377-4587 or BWRC +62 822-4796-0523
3. Give details so officers can handle it safely.

Help pangolins survive – share this, spread awareness, and protect wildlife.

Finally Home! 🕊️✨

A pair of Black-winged Mynas (Acridotheres melanopterus) has finally taken flight into the skies of Tengkudak Village! After a long journey of rehabilitation at the Bali Wildlife Rescue Center (BWRC)—some waiting patiently for 1 year, and others for up to 3 years.

Why Tengkudak?
This village, specifically the "Kampoeng Jalak Bali" and the Traditional Village of Tingkihkerep, has become a true sanctuary for endemic birds, driven by a community deeply committed to their preservation. Since 2024, dozens of Bali Mynas have been released here. With today’s release, there are now 3 pairs of Black-winged Mynas thriving in this ecosystem, further enriching the local biodiversity. 🌿

Huge thanks to , Human World Animal, our volunteers, and the Tengkudak community for their incredible collaboration and commitment to protecting this environment.

Anyway, conservation is a team effort. What role do you think local communities play in ensuring these birds thrive for generations to come? Let’s discuss below! 👇

Pejeng is stepping into the spotlight! 🌟🕊️

We are thrilled to announce that Pejeng Village has been designated as a strategic Pilot Project for Bali Myna conservation in Central Bali. But as Pak Bayu (Director of FNPF) reminds us, this is about more than just birds—it’s about Harmony. We are building a future where our wildlife is preserved and our people are prosperous.

This mission is only possible with the strong support and unwavering commitment of the Pejeng community. Thank you to all our partners and supporters who who joined us to protect the Balinese pride and its treasure

What if the key to saving an endangered species is just 2 cm wider?

Through careful observation and simple field experiments started from June 2025, we discovered that a nestbox with 8 cm diameter showed an interesting finding!

Slide by slide, this is our learning journey at FNPF Besikalung with Andrew, a volunteer from Australian Volunteers Program

Since his arrival in November 2025, our journey began with learning the basics—understanding the definition and history of permaculture, along with its ethical principles, design principles, and design process. We then moved into site observation, learning to read the land, climate, soil, and natural patterns. From this learning process, we took our first design steps by selecting the site and applying simple zoning.

This overview captures our learning progress so far, as we continue growing step by step with nature and the community.

On 21 December 2025, after years of challenges and care, our 7 brave wildlife began their journey from Bali to Central Kalimantan.

The process began from 2023, one Changeable Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus), one Black Eagle (Ictinaetus malaiensis), four Brahminy Kites (Haliastur indus), and one Oriental Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris) have fought through long rehabilitation, regular health checks, lab tests, and countless obstacles to prepare for life in the wild.

Their journey was not easy—crossing islands, rivers, and air transfers, adapting to new habitats, and undergoing careful habituation at Jerumbun, Sungai Sekonyer Village, and HKM Masoraian, Kotawaringin Lama.

Every step brings them closer to their destiny, soaring in the sky. Their courage and perseverance remind us why protecting wildlife is a journey worth every effort.

Let’s help more wildlife return to the wild by donating or join our volunteer program🫶🏼
