UNIVERSITY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SAN MARINO

Associated with the university are important intellectuals and scholars such as Umberto Eco, Renato Zangheri, Giulio Carlo Argan and Luciano Canfora. There is an ample selection of courses of study, from undergraduate and graduate degree programmes to master courses, from Advanced Education to the Research Doctorate in Historical Studies. Through history San Marino has kept its neutral political position and shared values of freedom, community and respect for others. Garibaldi was personally hosted in San Marino and this helped him to avoid enemy forces, Napoleon granted freedom and respect to the Republic and honorary citizenship was awarded to Lincoln in 1861. During the 2nd World 100.000 italian refugees were hosted and feeded on a population on 25.000 and between 1946 and 1957 the Most Serene Republic was a socialist-communist country.

THE ARENGO

"Yearly, on the 25th of March, San Marino celebrates the Anniversary of the Arengo. The holiday commemorates the birth of San Marino’s parliament duly elected by the people in the year 1906. The Arengo was the first form of government in the Republic of San Marino. Under this form of government, all of the patriarchs assembled to decide on important matters dealing with public life in San Marino. The Arengo still exists today. Twice a year, the citizens of San Marino can send requests of public interest to the Grand and General Council through their regents. Within one month the regents must decide whether the requests will be discussed in the Council.
March 25 in San Marino is a national holiday that commemorates the Arengo of 1906, which marked the birth of a Parliament elected directly by the people. On this day, all of the military corps appear in full-dress uniform in front of Palazzo Begni."
