🩺 Orangutan rehabilitation is not only about forest school and release into the wild. Behind the scenes, veterinary teams play a critical role in ensuring every orangutan receives the medical care needed to recover, grow stronger, and prepare for the future.

At rehabilitation centres such as Nyaru Menteng and Samboja Lestari, annual health checks involve extensive coordination between veterinarians, caregivers, technicians, and animal welfare teams.

Routine examinations are also essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and identifying health issues early. This is a very important part of long-term conservation efforts.

Through our Orangutan Initiative, we continue to highlight the many people and processes behind orangutan rehabilitation and biodiversity conservation in Indonesia. 🌿

Keeping up with Otan 🦧🌳

Since his release back in November, life in the wild seems to be going well for Otan. For the post-release monitoring team, sightings like this are more than a happy surprise, it shows how rehabilitation can successfully teach orangutans to adapt to their natural habitat once again.

Post-release monitoring is an important part of this journey. It helps understand how orangutans move through the forest, respond to their surroundings, and continue developing the skills they need to live independently.

Otan’s latest update is an encouraging one: a reminder that release is not the end of the story, but the start of a new chapter in the wild.

A life saved must also be a life worth living 🦧🌿

For 27-year-old Isti, life on Sanctuary Island #4 is about dignity, care and wellbeing. While she is unable to return to the wild, a protected island provides her with a life as near to nature as possible.

Her story reminds us that protecting endangered animals is not only about big milestones like returning to the forest. It is also about the ongoing commitment to provide dignity, protection, and lifelong care where it is needed most. 🧡💚

Last week, we had the pleasure of co-hosting ‘Create a Climate: A Danish-Indonesian Dialogue on Creativity, Sustainability, and Green Future’ with

Together with inspiring speakers and our own , the discussion explored how policy, community-initiatives, and creativity can help shape a more circular and sustainable future.

From biomaterials and community-driven initiatives to system that ensure resources stay in use, the conversation highlighted that the transition to a circular economy requires collaboration across sectors.

Over the past weeks, we’ve highlighted how Denmark supports biodiversity across Indonesia: from regenerative farming to sustainable landscapes.

In the last post of the series, together with local partners in Central and East Kalimantan work to prevent forest fires, strengthen indigenous forest stewardship and build climate resilience.

By supporting community-led conservation and disaster preparedness, these partnerships help protect both people and vital rainforest habitats. 🦧🍃

Because lasting conservation depends on local knowledge and shared responsibility.

New faces at the Embassy!
Please join us in welcoming our three new interns 👏✨

First, we welcome Linnea. She’s our new political and development intern. She studies a masters in Sustainable Transitions at Roskilde University and has an interest in resource management, circular economy and climate justice.

And then, we welcome Mette. She’s our new food, agriculture and fisheries intern. She also studies a masters in masters in Geography and Geoinformatics at University of Copenhagen, with a focus on livelihood security from a climate, food and environmental perspective.

Last but not least, say hi to Lidwina. She’s also our new food, agriculture and fisheries intern. She’s currently studying agricultural engineering at Bandung Institute of Technology and has an interest in sustainable agriculture, digital agriculture, and bio-based solutions within the agriculture.

Do you know that our ocean is monitored with a Marine Spatial Plan? It is a public, analytical tool used to manage human activities in ocean areas to achieve sustainable ecological, economic, and social goals.

The , and Embassy of Denmark to Indonesia share a partnership within the Strategic Sector Cooperation on maritime affairs, including on the development of a digital Marine Spatial Planning.

Marine Spatial Planning is crucial as it creates safety for maritime businesses and better predictability of the uses of the sea, especially in fostering a sustainable blue economy of Indonesia archipelago.

On 22nd January 2026, our new Maritime Sector Counsellor, Dagmar Catarina Hernandez Thomsen, were therefore had the pleasure of having a courtesy meeting with Director General for Marine Spatial Planning of the Ministry of Marine Affairs & Fisheries, Ibu Katrina Listriana, to further strengthen the cooperation.
