On 12 May 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project organized a Technical Consultation to inform the design of the Regional Training Program (RTP) on Plastic Waste Management, held via video conference. The consultation brought together ASEAN stakeholders to discuss regional training needs, identify priority capacity gaps, and gather inputs to support the development of practical and accessible learning opportunities on plastic waste management across ASEAN.

Participants exchanged views on priority topics for future learning, including circular economy approaches, technology and innovation, policy and governance, community engagement, and plastic value chain management. Discussions also highlighted the importance of accessible, practical, and context-responsive learning approaches that respond to national and local needs.

The Regional Training Program supports the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Action Plan (RAP) for Combating Marine Debris, contributing to strengthened regional knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and collaboration on plastic waste management.

On 30 April 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project organized the First Stakeholder Consultation for Development of the Synthesis Document and Implementation Roadmap for Key Recommendations by the SEA-MaP, via video conference.

The Consultation presented key findings, sought feedback, and validated findings of the draft Landscape Analysis and Risk Assessment. Discussions covered key topics such as the proposed underlying framework and tools developed to assess the recommendations, narrow priority areas, and produce a coherent, inclusive, and streamlined implementation roadmap; as well as potential risks and mitigation measures, among others. The Consultation brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the World Bank Group.

Further consultations will be conducted to seek feedback and inputs to guide the development of the Synthesis Document and Implementation Roadmap, ensuring the contents are contextually appropriate and relevant to the ASEAN context. The document is envisaged to serve as a reference document that seeks to support the utility, accessibility, and application of the knowledge products developed under the SEA-MaP to ASEAN beyond the lifetime of the project, and contribute to the ASEAN Regional Action Plan for Combatting Marine Debris (ASEAN RAP https://lnkd.in/g7Jh_GqR).

On 21 April 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project organized the Second Stakeholder Consultation on the Marine Plastics Resource Mobilization Strategy (RMS) via video conference. The objective was to present the draft RMS Strategy, Partnership Opportunities, Implementation Roadmap, together with the communication and dissemination materials that translate the Strategy into practical entry points for engagements, outlining priority actions, partnership opportunities, and indicative roles for different stakeholder groups.

The Consultation brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the World Bank Group. The session featured the presentation of the draft Regional Mechanism Strategy (RMS), outlining its strategic framework and financing architecture to support marine plastic action. Through interactive discussions, participants shared insights on strengthening financing alignment, improving investment readiness, and enhancing coordination and partnerships. The dialogue emphasized the need for clearer, more practical pathways to translate the RMS into actionable, country-level implementation.

The Strategy aims to support the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Action Plan (RAP) for Combating Marine Debris by improving resource mobilization and coordination among relevant agencies.

On 10-11 March 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project convened the Governmental Consultation of the Regional Guidebook on Standards for Responsible Plastic Waste Trade, Sorted Plastics and Recycled Plastics in Manila, Philippines.

The Consultation presented the draft Guidebook aiming to share and validate findings, as well as examined usability and clarity of practical features to ensure their applicability across ASEAN Member States contexts. Representatives from ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat engaged in discussions on the critical control points along the plastic value chain, priority gaps, and stakeholder mapping.

Participants also explored how the Guidebook can provide recommendations to support national action framing across short-, medium-, and long-term timeframes.

Warm appreciation goes to the Environmental Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Philippines, as the Chair of AWGCME and Co-Chair of the SEA-MaP PSC, as well as the host country, for their continued support. Sincere thanks to the AMS representatives for their valuable inputs and feedback to ensure that the Guidebook is developed in alignment with the needs and priorities of ASEAN.

On 3โ€“4 February 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project convened the Second Technical Consultation for the development of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Handbook and Customized Toolkit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Consultation presented the first draft of the Handbook and detailed Toolkit outline, designed to work together in supporting ASEAN Member States in developing and implementing effective EPR systems. Representatives from ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat engaged in discussions on guiding principles, monitoring and verification systems, producer registration, target-setting, compliance and enforcement, and emerging regional challenges.

Participants also explored how the Handbook and Toolkit can serve as practical, adaptable resources for policymakers and practitioners, and discussed opportunities to further promote their utilization in advancing EPR implementation across the region.

Appreciation goes to the Kementerian LH (Ministry of Environment of Indonesia) as the host country, and to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines, Chair of AWGCME and Co-Chair of the SEA-MaP PSC, for their continued support.

On 28 January 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project organized the Prototype Introduction, Second Stakeholder Consultation with the Project Steering Committee (PSC), and Second Coordination Meeting with Development Partners and Knowledge Platforms of the Regional Platform for Knowledge and Partnerships via a hybrid format. The clickable prototype of the Platform was presented and feedback gathered to support its development to ensure fit for purpose.

The Event brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the World Bank Group, alongside non-government stakeholders including international organizations, research institutions, and recycling organizations. Participants engaged in interactive discussions following a guided walk-through of the clickable web-based Platform prototype, which features the Knowledge Hub, Partnerships, and Training pages. The discussions were also conducted with the AMS on the long term planning for the Platform as the project develops a sustainability strategy.

The Platform is envisaged as a one-stop portal for digital and in-person engagement for information, training, knowledge exchange, peer-to-peer learning, and partnerships in the marine debris space.

On 26 January 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project organized the First Stakeholder Consultation on the Marine Plastics Resource Mobilization Strategy (RMS) via video conference. The objective was to present key findings from the regional stocktaking exercise and validate priority needs and financing gaps to guide the development of the strategy.

The Consultation brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States, The ASEAN Secretariat, and World Bank Group, alongside non-government stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, and intergovernmental organizations. The session featured interactive discussions where participants shared views on broadening engagement with private finance and transitioning toward more sustained, scalable systems. The dialogue focused on strengthening regional coherence and identifying opportunities to establish sustainable financing mechanisms to address marine plastic challenges.

The Strategy aims to support the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Action Plan (RAP) for Combating Marine Debris by improving resource mobilization and coordination among relevant agencies. In late March 2026, a second consultation will be organized to seek feedback on the draft Strategy and its outreach materials.
