Cities can become warmer than their surrounding areas when concrete, asphalt, and buildings absorb and retain heat, while limited vegetation and ventilation reduce natural cooling - making homes, streets, and public spaces increasingly difficult to cool.
So, extreme heat is not only a matter of discomfort as it affects health, infrastructure, energy systems, and the overal liveability of our cities. Its impact is also unequal: older people, children, outdoor workers, and low-income communities often face higher exposure and fewer cooling options. Today's pist encourages us to explore how local governments can help make neighbourhoods cooler and more liveable; from heat-helth planning, and connected green spaces to locally driven shading and communal cooling practices.
Cooling our cities then begins with understanding where heat is concentrated, who is most exposed, and which solutions fit the local context.
