Honoured to join the European Free Alliance General Assembly in Gandia this week, gathered under the banner "United for Peace."
On the panel on democratic reform in the EU, my message was simple: if we want a Europe that is stronger and more autonomous, we have to be consistent. We cannot speak with one voice on the world stage while we remain a cacophony at home β on Ukraine, on Gaza, on the rule of law. Democracy means no double standards: not inside the EU, and not in the accession countries.
And let us never lose sight of what is at the heart of this fight: the climate emergency. The ecological transition is our core agenda β the defining challenge of our time, and the ground on which everything else stands. There is no strong, autonomous, democratic Europe without a Europe that acts decisively for the planet.
Democracy is not only about institutions. It is about answering people's daily concerns β the housing crisis, energy poverty, the real cost of the green transition. Flexibility on the fiscal rules was found for defence; it must also be found for the social emergency families face every day.
If we are serious, we end the veto in foreign policy, we take on the fossil-fuel lobbies, big tech and media concentration, and we give power back to citizens and to democratic institutions.
And we name the real danger clearly: those who break the cordon sanitaire and hand legitimacy to the far right. That is unacceptable β and it is a fight we lead together. π
