Tlocrt bazilike na Mirinama u obliku latinskog križa bio je arhitektonski manifest nove vjere.

Njegova pozicija u uvali Sepen funkcionirala je kao jasna poruka u prostoru, postavljena točno tamo gdje je najvidljivija.
Zbog svoje pozicije i monumentalnosti, građevina je dominirala cijelom uvalom. Svaki brod koji je ulazio u kanal odmah je prepoznavao da uplovljava u kršćanski svijet. Bio je to prvi vizualni kontakt, uočljiv već s morske pučine kao bijeli orijentir na obali.

Ovaj tlocrt simbolizira stabilnost u pomorskom čvorištu. Mirine su služile kao duhovno središte, ali i kao jasan putokaz u mreži ranokršćanskog Jadrana. Visoki zidovi i karakterističan oblik križa javljali su pomorcima da su stigli na sigurno tlo koje pripada novoj, organiziranoj kulturi Carstva.

The floor plan of the basilica at Mirine, in the shape of a Latin cross, was an architectural manifesto of a new faith.

Its position in Sepen Bay functioned as a clear message in the landscape, placed exactly where it would be most visible. Because of its location and monumentality, the building dominated the entire bay. Every ship entering the channel would immediately recognize that it was sailing into a Christian world. It was the first visual point of contact, visible from the open sea as a white landmark on the shore.

This floor plan symbolized stability at a maritime crossroads. Mirine served as a spiritual center, but also as a clear guidepost within the network of the early Christian Adriatic. Its high walls and distinctive cross-shaped form signaled to sailors that they had arrived on safe ground belonging to a new, organized culture of the Empire.

Arhitektura snage: Zašto su zidine Mirina ojačane kontraforima?
Promatrajući zidine bazilike na Mirinama, nemoguće je ne primijetiti masivna vanjska ojačanja - kontrafore. Ovi istureni stupovi nisu bili samo estetski dodatak; oni su ključni tehnički potpis bizantskog graditeljstva koji spaja sakralnu arhitekturu s vojnom izdržljivošću.

Kontrafori su omogućili izgradnju monumentalnih zidova koji su morali nositi težinu krovne konstrukcije na nesigurnom, mekom tlu uz samu obalu, ali su istovremeno pružali vizualni dojam neosvojivosti. Isti takav gradbeni slog nalazimo i na bizantskim utvrdama poput onih na otočiću Sv. Observing the walls of the basilica at Mirine, it is impossible not to notice the massive external reinforcements — buttresses. These projecting supports were not merely aesthetic additions; they are a key technical hallmark of Byzantine construction, combining sacred architecture with military resilience.

Buttresses made it possible to build monumental walls capable of bearing the weight of the roof structure on unstable, soft ground right by the shore, while at the same time creating a visual impression of impregnability. The same construction style can be found in Byzantine fortifications such as those on the islet of St. Mark and at Bosar, confirming that Mirine was designed with the same level of seriousness as the Empire’s key military strongholds.

This architectural style directly links the basilica on Krk with the imperial architecture of northern Italy and the basilica in Ravenna, making the basilica at Mirine a unique example of strength and aesthetics that defy centuries and sea winds.

Od gradine Fertinata do Frankopanskog kaštela: Povijesni ciklus brda i uvale

Povijest Omišlja stalno je kretanje između sigurnosti brda i bogatstva obale. Mnogo prije dolaska Rimljana, na visokoj stijeni današnjeg Omišlja nalazila se prapovijesna gradina Fertinata, sjedište liburnske zajednice koja je nadzirala čitav zaljev.

U doba Rimskog Carstva, težište života spušta se izravno na more, u uvalu Sepen, gdje cvjeta raskošni Fulfinum s forumom i vilama. Međutim, to nije bio kraj priče za staru gradinu. S dolaskom nesigurnih vremena i ranog srednjeg vijeka, strateški položaj na brdu ponovno dobiva na važnosti. Život se s obale Mirina organski vraća na prirodnu utvrdu Omišlja, koja pod knezovima Frankopanima ponovno postaje neosvojivo središte moći.

Taj ciklus, od liburnske gradine preko rimskog lučkog grada do srednjovjekovnog kaštela, svjedoči o mudrom korištenju terena koji je tisućama godina diktirao opstanak na ovom dijelu otoka.

From the hillfort of Fertinata to the Frankopan castle: the historical cycle of the hill and the bay

The history of Omišalj is a constant movement between the safety of the hill and the wealth of the coast. Long before the arrival of the Romans, the prehistoric hillfort of Fertinata stood on the high cliff of present-day Omišalj, serving as the center of a Liburnian community that controlled the entire bay.

During the Roman Empire, the center of life shifted directly to the sea, into the bay of Sepen, where the prosperous Fulfinum flourished with its forum and villas. Yet this was not the end of the story for the ancient hillfort. With the arrival of unstable times and the early Middle Ages, the strategic position on the hill once again gained importance. Life gradually moved back from the coast of Mirine to the natural stronghold of Omišalj, which under the Frankopan princes became an unconquerable center of power once more.

This cycle, from a Liburnian hillfort, through a Roman port town, to a medieval castle, reveals the intelligent use of terrain that for thousands of years determined survival on this part of the island.

Gjuro Szabo: Prvi zapisi o monumentalnosti Mirina

Mnogo prije suvremenih arheoloških kampanja i digitalnih rekonstrukcija, Mirine su fascinirale istraživače koji su u gustom šipražju uvale Sepen prepoznali obrise nečeg iznimnog. Jedan od najvažnijih zapisa iz tog ranog razdoblja potječe od Gjure Szabe, koji je još 1929. godine detaljno opisao ostatke ranokršćanske crkve.

U vremenu kada je lokalitet bio prepušten prirodi, Szabo je prvi upozorio znanstvenu javnost na monumentalnost zidina koje su, unatoč zapuštenosti, jasno svjedočile o snazi nekadašnjeg Fulfinuma. Njegovo divljenje arhitekturi koja je prkosila vremenu postavilo je temelje za sva kasnija istraživanja.

Danas, dok promatramo konzervirane zidine bazilike, zapravo gledamo isti onaj prizor koji je prije gotovo stotinu godina motivirao prve istraživače da zaštite ovaj jedinstveni prostor od zaborava. Szabini zapisi podsjećaju nas na to da je fascinacija Mirinama trajna i da svaka nova generacija samo nastavlja dešifrirati priču koju je on tada počeo čitati.

Long before modern archaeological campaigns and digital reconstructions, Mirine fascinated researchers who recognized the outlines of something extraordinary hidden within the dense vegetation of the bay of Sepen. One of the most important records from this early period comes from Gjuro Szabo, who in 1929 provided a detailed description of the remains of the early Christian church.

At a time when the site had largely been reclaimed by nature, Gjuro Szabo was among the first to draw the attention of the scientific community to the monumentality of the walls, which despite neglect still clearly testified to the power of the former Fulfinum. His admiration for architecture that defied time laid the foundations for all later research.

Today, as we observe the preserved walls of the basilica, we are in fact looking at the very same scene that, almost a century ago, inspired the first researchers to protect this unique place from oblivion. Szabo’s writings remind us that fascination with Mirine is enduring, and that every new generation simply continues deciphering the story he first began to read.

Kako je Fulfinum u jednom trenutku nestao s karte otoka Krka?

Povijest arheoloških otkrića često je isprepletena zabunama, a jedna takva dogodila se u drugoj polovici 18. stoljeća. Glasoviti putopisac Alberto Fortis, čija su djela o Dalmaciji čitali širom Europe, posjetio je otok Krk u potrazi za tragovima antičkog Fulfinuma. Međutim, tadašnji krčki biskup izvijestio ga je da se ruševine tog grada nalaze pokraj Baške, vjerojatno ga poistovjetivši s ostacima kasnoantičke gradine Corinthia.

Upravo zbog te informacije, znanje o stvarnoj lokaciji rimskog grada i bazilike na Mirinama privremeno se izgubilo. Iako je mletački diplomat Antonio Vinciguerra još u 15. stoljeću ispravno bilježio ruševine u uvali Sepen, Fortisova je objava unijela pomutnju koja je trajala desetljećima.

Tek će kasnija istraživanja i zapisi poput onih Gjure Szabe iz 1929. godine vratiti Mirine i Fulfinum na njihovo pravo mjesto - u srce uvale Sepen, gdje su stoljećima čekali da njihova stvarna priča ponovno bude ispričana.

How did Fulfinum once disappear from the map of the island of Krk?

The history of archaeological discoveries is often intertwined with misunderstandings, and one such confusion occurred in the second half of the 18th century. The renowned travel writer Alberto Fortis, whose works on Dalmatia were widely read across Europe, visited the island of Krk in search of traces of the ancient city of Fulfinum. However, the bishop of Krk at the time informed him that the ruins of the city were located near Baška, most likely identifying them with the remains of the Late Antique hillfort of Corinthia.

Because of this information, knowledge of the true location of the Roman town and the basilica at Mirine was temporarily lost. Although the Venetian diplomat Antonio Vinciguerra had already correctly documented the ruins in the bay of Sepen back in the 15th century, Fortis’s publication spread confusion that lasted for decades.

Only later research and records, including those of Gjuro Szabo from 1929, restored Mirine and Fulfinum to their rightful place — in the heart of the bay of Sepen, where for centuries they had waited for their true story to be told once again.

Jedna od najzanimljivijih arhitektonskih značajki kompleksa na Mirinama je neproporcionalno velik atrij smješten između same bazilike i morske obale. Dok su unutarnji prostori crkve bili namijenjeni lokalnoj zajednici, ovaj prostrani otvoreni trg imao je sasvim drugu funkciju, bio je prihvatni centar za putnike namjernike.

Mirine su se nalazile na ključnom plovnom putu istočnog Jadrana, što ih je činilo prirodnim odmorištem za vojnike, trgovce i hodočasnike. Atrij je funkcionirao kao svojevrsni "terminal" gdje su se putnici okupljali nakon iskrcavanja, obavljali pripreme za ulazak u sveti prostor ili jednostavno tražili zaklon.

Taj prostrani trg svjedoči o otvorenosti Mirina prema vanjskom svijetu. Nisu bile zatvoren samostanski sklop, već pulsirajuća točka susreta morskih puteva i kopna, projektirana da primi veći broj ljudi nego što je u uvali stalno boravilo.

While the interior spaces of the church were intended for the local community, this vast open courtyard served an entirely different purpose — it functioned as a reception area for travelers and visitors.

Mirine stood along a key maritime route of the eastern Adriatic, making it a natural stop for soldiers, merchants, and pilgrims. The atrium operated as a kind of ancient “terminal,” where travelers gathered after disembarking, prepared to enter the sacred space, or simply sought shelter.

Mirine nisu bile isključivo mjesto molitve i proizvodnje ulja, već su funkcionirale kao kompleksan i potpuno samodostatan sustav. Arheološki nalazi unutar prigradskog sklopa otkrili su tragove koji nadilaze uobičajenu sliku antičkog imanja, a najzanimljiviji među njima su dokazi o obradi metala.

Ti nalazi sugeriraju da je zajednica u uvali Sepen imala vlastite radionice u kojima se metal obrađivao za potrebe održavanja flote, poljoprivrednih alata ili samog kompleksa. Dok su se u bazilici odvijali obredi, u neposrednoj blizini odvijao se intenzivan zanatski rad. Takva diverzifikacija poslova, od ribarstva i maslinarstva do metalurgije, pokazuje visoku razinu organizacije i neovisnosti.

Mirine was not exclusively a place of worship and olive oil production, but functioned as a complex and fully self-sufficient system. Archaeological discoveries within the suburban complex revealed traces that go beyond the usual image of an ancient estate, with some of the most fascinating evidence pointing to metalworking activities.

These findings suggest that the community in the bay of Sepen had its own workshops where metal was processed for the maintenance of the fleet, agricultural tools, or the complex itself. While religious ceremonies were taking place in the basilica, intensive craft production was happening nearby. Such diversification of activities — from fishing and olive cultivation to metallurgy — demonstrates a remarkably high level of organization and independence.

Mirine koje danas posjećujemo, s impresivnim zidinama i jasnim tlocrtima, duguju svoj opstanak odlučnosti jedne žene. Arheologinja Aleksandra Faber prepoznala je značaj uvale Sepen u ključnom trenutku, kada je povijesno naslijeđe bilo pod velikim pritiskom. Njezina uloga u zaštiti Fulfinuma i Mirina nadilazi samu struku; ona je bila prva linija obrane ovog prostora.
