Hong Kong, 30 August 2026 — The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) Hong Kong joined the culmination of the OWWA Cup: Ang Liga ng OFW, organized by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Hong Kong and held at Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The event celebrated the unity, sportsmanship, and community spirit of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong.

The celebration was graced by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Mindanao Development Authority Secretary and Chairperson Leo Tereso A. Magno, Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong Consul General Romulo Victor M. Israel, Jr., and OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne M. Caunan.

Secretary Cacdac delivered an inspiring message to the Filipino community, highlighting the importance of unity among OFWs and recognizing their contributions as modern-day heroes.

“Eto po talaga ang gusto ng mahal nating Pangulong Marcos – na magsama-sama tayo para ipagdiwang ang inyong pagiging bayani para sa National Heroes Day,” Secretary Cacdac said.

“Lahat tayo panalo, walang uuwing talo, kasi the mere fact na nandidito kayo, panalo na kayong lahat,” he added.

The closing program also brought together key Philippine government officials, including DMW Assistant Secretary Maria Regina Angela G. Galias, OWWA Deputy Administrator Rosalia Susana Bahia-Catapang, DMW Office of the Secretary Chief of Staff Atty. Zedy Angela L. Garcia, Vice Consul Allan G. Revote, MWO Hong Kong Labor Attaché Cesar L. Chavez Jr. and Assistant Labor Attaché Nemesia Karen E. Arlan; and OWWA Hong Kong Welfare Officers Marilou M. Sumalinog and Christelyn R. Caceres.

Special guests, including athletes Calvin Abueva and Abigail Maraño, joined the celebration, symbolizing the spirit of sportsmanship and unity. Championship games in basketball and volleyball showcased the talent and camaraderie of Filipino teams in Hong Kong, making the OWWA Cup a true highlight of community engagement.

“Magandang gawain ito para makapag-relax naman tayo sa ating mga gawain sa trabaho natin araw-araw,” said Labor Attaché Chavez in his welcome remarks, where he also congratulated all the participants.

The participation of Secretary Cacdac and other Philippine government officials underscored the government’s commitment and dedication to supporting OFWs not only through welfare and protection programs, but also by promoting activities that strengthen solidarity, pride, and community building.

The OWWA Cup Closing formed part of the broader Alagang OWWA Serbisyo Caravan, which brought frontline services and assistance closer to OFWs in Hong Kong. # # #

𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗢𝗙𝗪𝘀. On the 3rd anniversary of her passing, we pay our utmost tribute and respect to the late Department of Migrant Workers’ Secretary Susan "T***s" V. Ople. We are grateful for her legacy of uplifting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and protecting their rights against unethical employment practices. She will forever be a standard of compassionate public service and action.

Even to this day, she continues to uplift millions of modern-day heroes and their families. As the first DMW Secretary, her vision remains the blueprint as we endeavor to build DMW into the true “Tahanan ng OFW”. She laid the groundwork for accessible healthcare for OFWs and paved the way for streamlined processes and the digitalization of DMW to better serve OFWs and their families.

Her legacy lives on as DMW continues to be a safe haven for OFWs and their families. Maraming salamat, Sec T***s.

Hong Kong, August 16, 2026 — The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) Hong Kong successfully organized a Kumustahan Session with Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary Felicitas Q. Bay at the DMW-OWWA OFW Global Centre in Hong Kong.

The event provided our kababayans in Hong Kong with an opportunity to be briefed on the wide range of programs and services offered by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), remind them of their legal rights while working abroad and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for upskilling programs that they can avail. The event reinforces DMW’s commitment to ensuring that Overseas Filipino Workers remain informed, empowered, and safeguarded in their overseas journey.

Undersecretary Bay was joined by Consul General Romulo Victor M. Israel Jr., Vice Consul George Mariano Soriano, TESDA Executive Director Janet M. Abasolo, DMW Adjudication Bureau Director Maria Bernadine Madamba and Labor Attaché Atty. Cesar L. Chavez Jr.. Together, they addressed concerns raised by the community and reaffirmed the Philippine government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of overseas Filipino workers.

“24/7 po ang ating operations sa Department of Migrant Workers at sa lahat ng Migrant Workers Offices,” Undersecretary Bay said adding that the Department also has a One Repatriation Command Center through hotline 1348 ready to cater to OFWs and their families other than the MWO Hotlines available at post.

Discussions highlighted pressing matters such as employment challenges, access to DMW’s legal and welfare services, and the importance of strengthening support systems for Filipino workers abroad.

Director Madamba reminded the OFWs on the role of their various agencies while they are deployed abroad and on things they should look out for to avoid illegal recruitment scams.

When asked about how to avail of the MWO AKSYON Fund assistance during the open forum Labor Attaché Chavez said that “In most cases kapag may lumapit sa amin we will be providing referrals pero kapag available naman dito, we will provide the assistance right away.” He also reminded that this assistance is a one-time assistance for those workers in need.

Updates were also shared on the number of those who have benefitted in DMW’s Programs and Services such as the AKSYON Fund wherein MWO Hong Kong alone have served about 303 OFWs from January to June 2026 with services amounting to HKD3.9 million or PhP31 million total. # # #
