Water rarely respects borders. More than 150 countries share rivers, lakes or groundwater resources and where governance is weak, that can turn into tension rather than cooperation.

Switzerland's "Blue Peace" initiative reframes shared water as a reason to bring countries and communities to the same table, not a source of conflict. Swiss-supported programmes, led by the SDC (Swiss Development & Cooperation), apply this approach from the Rhine to Central Asia and the Middle East, helping states that depend on the same rivers work together rather than compete.

The approach also operates locally: in fragile contexts, Swiss-backed projects combine water infrastructure, local dialogue and shared data to ease tensions between neighbouring communities before they escalate.

It's a quiet but concrete example of how technical cooperation can double as peace facilitation, a niche where Switzerland has built real expertise.

Swiss watchmaking in Hong Kong: beyond the big names

Consul General Daniel Freihofer and Trade Officer San Wang had the pleasure of visiting the Swiss Independent Watchmakers Pavilion (SIWP) at the 45th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and meeting the Swiss exhibitors taking part this year.

What we particularly enjoy about the SIWP is the diversity it represents. Swiss watchmaking is not only about the globally recognised names. It is also about independent brands, entrepreneurs, family businesses and craftsmen, each bringing their own story, design and expertise to the world of watches.

From established names with long traditions to smaller independent brands, the pavilion is a great showcase of the creativity, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit that characterize Swiss watchmaking.

A big thank you to Amarildo Pilo and the SIWP team for bringing these Swiss companies together in Hong Kong and to all the exhibitors for the warm welcome and the interesting conversations.

Hong Kong is an important market for Swiss watchmaking. In 2025, Swiss watch exports to Hong Kong were worth CHF 1.79 billion, making Hong Kong the fourth-largest destination for Swiss watches worldwide, after the US, Japan and mainland China. But Hong Kong's importance goes beyond the local market. As a major international trading and re-export hub, it provides Swiss watchmakers with access to mainland China and markets across Asia.

For us at the Consulate General of Switzerland, visits like this are also a reminder that supporting Swiss business abroad means supporting the entire ecosystem: from established companies to independent entrepreneurs and specialised SMEs.

Switzerland's flag has quite a story behind it. The white cross on red first appeared in 1339, at the Battle of Laupen, as a way for Swiss confederates to recognize each other in battle. But it stayed a military and cantonal symbol for centuries. It only became the country's official flag in 1848, after Napoleon briefly forced a tricolour on the country during the Helvetic Republic. There's also a surprising connection to the Red Cross: General Guillaume-Henri Dufour helped adopt Switzerland's military flag in 1840, then co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva in 1863 which explains why the two emblems look so alike. On top of that, Switzerland's flag is one of only two square national flags in the world (the other is the Vatican's), and a University of St Gallen study found the Swiss cross adds genuine value to "Swiss Made" products. 🌳 Meaningful architectural design begins with a dialogue between people, nature, and place. ✨

For over three decades, world-renowned Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea has reshaped how we imagine space. Guided by his belief that every place holds its own genius loci, or the spirit of a place, Enzo Enea brings this philosophy to life at the Enea Tree Museum, which he opened in 2010. There, ancient trees are preserved as living cultural treasures, seamlessly connecting architecture, nature, and human ecology.

He is also spearheading the landscape architecture of Central Crossing, a new landmark project in the heart of Central scheduled for completion this year, which reconnects the urban fabric through green public spaces and heritage conservation.

At Business of Design Week (BODW) 2026, Enzo Enea will share how to unite architecture, nature and people to create landscapes that embody both aesthetic beauty and sustainability, driving lasting transformation for future generations.
