Philippine Ambassador to Greece H.E. Giovanni E. Palec, with Mrs. Novelyn Palec, led the Philippine Embassy personnel during the commemoration of the 59th ASEAN Founding Anniversary jointly held by the ASEAN Committee in Athens (ACAT) Embassies on 07 August 2026 with this year’s theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
H.E. Sathana Kashemsanta Na Ayudhya, Ambassador of Thailand and the current ACAT Chair hosted this year’s celebration at his official residence. H.E. Bebeb A.K. Nugraha Djundjunan, Ambassador of Indonesia, and Ms. Pham B**h Thuy, Chargé d'Affaires, a.i. of the Embassy of Viet Nam, also joined the ceremony.
This year’s Guest of Honor was Mr. Dimitris Skalkos, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Secretary General for International Economic Affairs and Chairman of Enterprise Greece.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Na Ayudha reflected on ASEAN’s evolution as a regional community founded on unity, cooperation, and a shared sense of purpose. He noted that these principles continue to guide ASEAN not only in strengthening cooperation among its Member States, but also in building meaningful partnerships beyond the region.
Against this backdrop, Ambassador Na Ayudha highlighted ASEAN’s growing engagement with the European Union and Greece, citing recent high-level exchanges as a reflection of the expanding ties between the two regions and with Greece. Bringing the message closer to the work of the ASEAN Committee in Athens (ACAT), he drew attention to the words “care” and “share” in The ASEAN Way anthem, underscoring ACAT’s commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation for the mutual benefit of the peoples of ASEAN and Greece.
Secretary General Skalkos extended his warmest congratulations on the 59th Anniversary of ASEAN and Thailand’s current Chairship of ACAT. He highlighted the significant presence of workers from ASEAN Member States in Greece and their positive relations with Greek employers and communities. Quoting prominent Greek poet and diplomat Giorgos Seferis—“In this world that grows ever narrower, each of us needs all the others”—Secretary General Skalkos emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening ASEAN-EU and ASEAN-Greece cooperation and building greater resilience amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
The official program also featured the traditional Phu Thai dance of Sakon Nakhon performed by the Thai Association and Meditation in Greece.
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to the booths of the four ACAT embassies offering a variety of traditional culinary elicacies. ASEAN’s warm hospitality and spirit of “One Caring and Sharing Community" filled the celebration as everyone shared meals and stories together.
Ambassador and Mrs. Palec welcomed the guests at the Philippine booth which served seafood kare-kare, torta giniling, garlic rice and the classic Filipino dessert halo-halo. END
