He told us we had a lot of resources, but because those handling the resources were stealing and misusing them, we were suffering. He begged us to give him the power, our votes, to help us.
He said, instead of burdening us with taxes, he would seal the leakages and use the resources to develop the country.
I believed him because I knew how our monies were being stolen and given to shady companies like rLG and Zoomlion. I knew this because I investigated GYEEDA and other corruption scandals.
Mahama took some actions on GYEEDA, including prosecuting his own party member and MP, Abuga Pele.
But Akufo-Addo said it wasn't enough.
"It is clear from the actions taken on cases like judgment debts, the World Cup saga, GYEEDA, SADA, the DVLA saga, the Metro Mass branding, etc., that the fight against corruption is a sham. I say again, the so-called fight against corruption is a sham."
Sham paa? Yes. Nana said it was a sham. But where and when did he say this? Well, that speech was titled:
'SPEECH BY NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO, 2016 NPP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, ON “THE REAL STATE OF THE NATION – A NATION IN CRISIS”, ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2016, AT THE GHANA COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS.'
Did he say "A Nation in Crisis"? (He might have been prophesying the future as well.)
Well, we were in crisis and decided to give our power to the man who came begging, "Please, try me."
When he got the power, did he undo the ills of the Mahama era?
Let me stay with only GYEEDA. The Mahama administration canceled all the GYEEDA contracts, but surprisingly left out one fraudulent contract they had awarded to Zoomlion.
The NPP in November 2016, their last major press conference before the election, told Ghanaians that Mahama was conniving with Zoomlion to defraud Ghanaians. The NPP said that the contract had expired in 2013. It had not been renewed, but the government was paying money.
(Google "Gov’t fraudulently paying millions to Zoomlion – NPP alleges" and read what the NPP said)
The NPP said Mahama could not deal with contracts of that nature because he was directly benefitting from them.
So what did Akufo-Addo do to that contract when he won power?
One of the first things he did was to visit Jospong and shower praises on its CEO, Joseph Siaw Agyepong.
And the contract they attacked Mahama over was extended.
"A NATION IN CRISIS"--AKUFO-ADDO'S "PROPHECY"
********************************************************
Between March 2013 and February 2017, that shady deal cost Ghana 1.62 BILLION GHANA CEDIS. There was no written agreement. There was no PPA approval. Nothing.
But Akufo-Addo and his Attorney-General allowed the deal to continue when they came into office. And that contract still goes on under disturbing terms.
So, when some of us are not happy with this man, it isn't because we hate him. He betrayed our trust.
And it's difficult to trust a man who is praising Jospong and said Domelevo is working against the interest of the nation.
