Blegen Library The Blegen Library focuses on all aspects of Greece and the Greeks from the earliest prehistory through late antiquity. W. Heermance.

About the Blegen Library

The Blegen Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens was founded in 1888 with a single reading room. An initial addition to the library was dedicated in 1915, and, in 1959, a new wing was added, funded by the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation. A further extension, partially funded by the United States Agency for International Development, was completed in

1991, effectively doubling the space of the library. The collection currently has close to 100,000 volumes including nearly seven hundred periodical titles (current and defunct), forming a major research library on prehistoric and classical archaeology of the Mediterranean region, and classical languages, history, and culture. About two thousand readers of all nationalities use the library. The library is non-circulating, and all books must be consulted on the premises. The Blegen Library welcomes gifts of books, journals, or offprints which may be appropriate for its collection as defined by the Acquisitions Policy. Gifts are accepted with the understanding that the Library will make all decisions regarding their retention, location, cataloging, or any other consideration relating to their use. A letter from the Library will be sent to acknowledge all gifts. Gifts may be added to the collection, donated to another library, or sold with the proceeds to benefit the Blegen Library. Books in the Blegen Library are classified according to a system developed in 1903 by the director T. An investigation and analysis of the classification systems was published by former Head Librarian, Camilla MacKay in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, Vol. 36(2) 2003: Classification of a Classical Studies Library in Greece and the Changing Nature of Classical Scholarship in the Twentieth Century, and is made accessible here with the kind permission of the author and publisher.

New acquisitions in our library!

Two new volumes have been added to our collection through our publications exchange programme with the French School at Athens (École française d’Athènes), reflecting the value of scholarly collaboration between research institutions.

Starting July 28 and throughout August, the Blegen Library will be open to visitors Mondays through Fridays from 09.00 to 15.30 and will be closed on Saturdays.

No new cards will be issued during the month of August, and no orientations will take place.

• Work is underway on a systematic inventory of the library’s collection, carried out section by section by two staff members with the support of CYA volunteers.

• For the first time, a tablet is being used to move through the stacks in call number sequence, enabling real-time checking of materials on the shelves while bibliographic records are updated as needed. The project is progressing gradually, with a focus on selected sections.



• Σε εξέλιξη βρίσκεται συστηματική απογραφή της συλλογής της βιβλιοθήκης, η οποία πραγματοποιείται τμηματικά από δύο μέλη του προσωπικού με τη βοήθεια εθελοντών του CYA.

• Για πρώτη φορά χρησιμοποιείται tablet για την περιήγηση στα ράφια με βάση τη σειρά των ταξιθετικών αριθμών (call numbers), επιτρέποντας τον έλεγχο του υλικού σε πραγματικό χρόνο στα ράφια, ενώ παράλληλα ενημερώνονται όπου χρειάζεται οι βιβλιογραφικές εγγραφές. Το έργο προχωρά σταδιακά, με έμφαση σε επιλεγμένα τμήματα.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens cordially invites you to our Annual Open Meeting!

Bonna D. Wescoat, Director of the School, will discuss the activities of the American School in 2025 and will then be joined by Maria Georgopoulou, Director of the Gennadius Library, for her lecture “Windows into a Collector’s Mind: The Scrapbooks of Johannes Gennadius.”

The event will be held in Thessaloniki today, April 1, 7pm at the Casts Museum (Μουσείο Εκμαγείων) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus.

The Athens meeting will be held on Friday, April 3rd in Cotsen Hall, Anapiron Polemou 9, Athens at 7pm (Greece) | 12pm (U.S. EDT).
