Μισό αιώνα μετά την πτώση των δικτατοριών στην Ελλάδα, την Πορτογαλία και την Ισπανία, οι δημοκρατικές μεταβάσεις στη Νότια Ευρώπη εξακολουθούν να αποτελούν πεδίο ιστορικής συζήτησης, πολιτικών ερμηνειών και ανταγωνιστικών μνημών.
Ο τόμος επανεξετάζει τις μεταβάσεις αυτές όχι ως γραμμικές πορείες από τον αυταρχισμό στη δημοκρατική «κανονικότητα», αλλά ως άνισες και συγκρουσιακές διαδικασίες, που διαμορφώθηκαν μέσα από κοινωνικές κινητοποιήσεις, θεσμικές συνέχειες, πολιτικούς συμβιβασμούς και διαφορετικές ιστορικές εμπειρίες.
Με τη συμμετοχή ερευνητριών και ερευνητών που μελετούν την Ελλάδα, την Ισπανία και την Πορτογαλία, το βιβλίο εξετάζει τα αυταρχικά καθεστώτα, τις μορφές αντίστασης, την πολιτική των μεταβάσεων, τον ρόλο της Αριστεράς και τις μακρόχρονες αποτυπώσεις του εκδημοκρατισμού στις εργασιακές σχέσεις, την αστυνόμευση, την ιδιότητα του πολίτη, την αποαποικιοποίηση, τη δημόσια μνήμη και την πολιτική κουλτούρα.
Με αφετηρία το διεθνές εργαστήριο «Dictatorships/Democracies: Political Transitions and the Left in Southern Europe», που πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Αθήνα τον Νοέμβριο του 2024, ο τόμος μάς καλεί να ξανασκεφτούμε τη δημοκρατία ως πεδίο συμπερίληψης και αποκλεισμού, σύγκρουσης και πολιτικής δυνατότητας.

Half a century after the fall of the dictatorships in Greece, Portugal, and Spain, the meanings and legacies of Southern Europe’s democratic transitions remain contested.
This volume revisits those transitions not as linear passages from authoritarianism to democratic “normality”, but as uneven and conflictual processes shaped by social mobilisation, institutional continuities, political compromise, and competing memories.
Bringing together scholars working on Greece, Spain, and Portugal, the book examines authoritarian rule, resistance, the politics of transition, the role of the Left, and the longer afterlives of democratisation in labour relations, policing, citizenship, decolonisation, public memory, and political culture.
Emerging from the international workshop “Dictatorships/Democracies: Political Transitions and the Left in Southern Europe”, held in Athens in November 2024, the volume invites us to rethink democracy as a contested field of inclusion, exclusion, conflict, and political possibility.
