The Stone Circles of The Gambia, part of the larger Senegambian Stone Circles, stand as silent witnesses to an ancient and sophisticated civilisation. These megalithic monuments, found primarily in two main sites, Wassu and Kerr Batch, are part of the world's largest concentration of stone circles, with over 1,000 spread across Gambia and Senegal.

Recognised for their outstanding universal value, the Stone Circles of The Gambia were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Today, both Wassu and Kerr Batch sites offer visitors interpretation centres and museums, providing fascinating insights into ancient West African civilisations.

The Banjul Seaport on Wednesday morning (15/04/2025) welcomed the Oceania Sirena, a luxury cruise liner operated by Oceania Cruises, as it made its inaugural call to The Gambia with approximately 611 passengers on board.

The vessel, part of the Oceania Cruises fleet, represents a growing trend of premium cruise lines selecting The Gambia as a key stop on their West African itineraries.

Upon disembarkation, passengers were warmly received by West African Tours Ltd and guided through a variety of curated shore excursions. These experiences highlight The Gambia’s expanding capacity to accommodate and deliver high-quality services to discerning cruise visitors.

On Tuesday, 14th April 2026, the Chair of the Governing Body of the Gambia Tourism Board, Mr. Momodou Bamba Saho, together with members of the Governing Body — including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Director General, Mrs. Ida Cham Njai, and Mr. Sulayman Jatta — conducted an extensive familiarisation tour of the Tourism Development Area and adjoining tourism corridors.

The tour covered key locations including Bakau Cape Point Beach, Fajara Golf Course, the BB Craft Market, Kotu Bridge, the BB and Palma strips, and development sites in Bijilo, Brufut, Tanji, Tujereng, Sanyang, and Gunjur. Areas of concern — including encroachment, beach access issues, stalled projects, and environmental pressures — were also visited and assessed.

The delegation engaged directly with tourism stakeholders, including tourist guides, taxi operators, and craft market vendors, whose insights on the ground are vital to improving the visitor experience in The Gambia.

The Chair emphasised that effective tourism governance must be informed by direct field observation, and reaffirmed the GTBoard's commitment to destination improvement, environmental stewardship, orderly tourism development, and the protection of tourism land for its intended purposes.

The Gambia Tourism Board remains committed to working with all relevant institutions, communities, operators, and investors to build a cleaner, more attractive, and better-managed destination.

The Republic of The Gambia was proudly represented at the International Tourism Forum of Mauritania (FTIM )2026, held in Nouakchott from 2–5 April 2026. The delegation, led by the Honourable Ministry of Tourism and Culture The Gambia, Abdoulie Jobe, Permanent Secretary, Amie Njie and the Director General of the Gambia Tourism Board, Mrs Ida Jeng Njie, engaged with regional and international tourism leaders throughout the four-day forum.

Minister Jobe held substantive meetings with regional counterparts, emphasising the need for cross-regional collaboration on sustainable tourism, and met with Turkish Airlines to advance discussions on the Istanbul–Banjul air corridor.

Director General Njie participated in the panel on "Promoting National Culinary Heritage as a Tourism Driver," showcasing The Gambia's gastronomic traditions and the growing global recognition of Gambian cuisine as a compelling tourism asset.

The forum has opened promising avenues for partnership and reinforced The Gambia's position as a dynamic and forward-looking tourism destination.
