First Lady Launches Building Resilience Campaign for Women and Girls

Her Excellency First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow on Sunday launched the Campaign for Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change and Conflict.

Madam Bah-Barrow noted that climate change is already affecting lives across Africa through longer dry seasons, floods, coastal erosion and rising temperatures. Women and girls, she said, are often the hardest hit as they bear the burden on farms, in the homes, and during crises.

The First Lady called on partners and communities to invest in solutions that place women and girls at the centre of climate action. She reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the lives and livelihoods of women and girls in the face of climate change and to building healthier and more resilient communities.

She warmly welcomed her sister, Her Excellency Zita Oligui Nguema, First Lady of the Gabonese Republic, and the distinguished delegation accompanying her. The First Lady described the visit as a powerful sign of African unity, solidarity and sisterhood.

Excerpts from First Lady Fatoumatta Bah Barrow at the Inauguration of the Accident and Emergency Unit- Bansang General Hospital

“For many families in the Central River Region, Upper River Region and nearby communities, reaching emergency medical care has been a long and difficult journey. Too many lives have been put at risk because of delays, especially mothers during childbirth, sick children and victims of road accidents.”

I am therefore very proud that we are changing that story today. With this new Accident and Emergency Unit life-saving care will be brought closer to the people. It will reduce unnecessary referrals, improve emergency treatment and give families greater confidence in our healthcare system. Most importantly, it will help save lives.
