Statement by the IEC Chairman on the 2026 Supplementary Voter Registration
The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Joseph Colley, has announced the commencement of the 2026 Supplementary Voter Registration exercise, describing it as a vital component of the country’s democratic process ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The nationwide registration exercise is scheduled to run for a period of 44 days, from 8th April to 21st May 2026. It is designed to provide an opportunity for all eligible Gambians—particularly those who have recently attained the age of 18—to register and be included in the national voters’ roll.
In his address, the Chairman called on all qualified citizens to participate actively and responsibly in the exercise. He emphasized that a credible and inclusive voter register is fundamental to the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections.
The exercise will also allow for the transfer of registration details, as well as the replacement of lost, damaged, or defaced voter cards. To ensure accessibility and efficiency, the Commission has deployed approximately 100 registration teams across the country, operating in over 700 registration centres, with activities conducted daily, including weekends and public holidays.
The Chairman further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the registration process. He cautioned against any form of electoral malpractice, including multiple registrations and fraudulent activities, warning that such actions constitute offences under the law and will be dealt with accordingly.
The Commission remains steadfast in its mandate to deliver a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process, and will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to safeguard the democratic rights of Gambians.
In conclusion, the Chairman urged all citizens to turn out in large numbers, conduct themselves peacefully, and contribute to the success of the registration exercise as a crucial step toward strengthening democracy in The Gambia.
