Portia Aboagye Earns National Call-Up for African Senior Athletics Championship

UENR athlete, Aboagye Portia, has earned a call-up to Ghana’s national athletics team for the African Athletics Championship, following her impressive performances at the Mini Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

Portia, a final year Resource Enterprise and Entrepreneurship student, attracted attention after winning gold in the women’s 800-metre event before adding a silver medal in the 400-metre final during the competition held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Her latest achievement marks a significant milestone in her athletics journey and further highlights UENR’s growing presence in university sports.

The national call-up reflects recognition of Portia’s consistency, discipline, and strong performances on the track as she prepares to represent Ghana on the continental stage.

The African Senior Athletics Championships is organised under the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) in collaboration with Ghana Athletics, World Athletics and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation of the Republic of Ghana.

Officials of the Sports Directorate have congratulated the athlete on her selection, describing it as a proud moment for both the University and its sporting community.

Portia’s invitation also serves as motivation for other student-athletes at UENR, many of whom continue to train and compete despite challenges relating to limited sports equipment and training resources.

Her selection adds to the University’s recent successes at the Mini GUSA Games and reinforces ongoing efforts to promote athletic excellence alongside academic development at UENR.

UENR Eliminate Hosts UPSA in Dramatic Quarter-Final Clash

UENR booked a place in the next stage of the Mini Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) football competition after defeating host institution, the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), 5–4 on penalties following a fiercely contested quarter-final encounter.

Playing before a charged home crowd, UPSA took the lead in the first half and maintained control for much of the game. UENR, however, responded strongly after the break, with team captain Klinsman Siaw rising highest to head home the equaliser from a set piece.

The match developed into an intense contest as both sides pushed aggressively for a winning goal, but neither team could find a breakthrough before the final whistle.

Attention then shifted to a tense penalty shootout, where both teams displayed composure and tactical discipline under pressure. Despite a yellow card incident involving a UENR player during the shootout, the team maintained its focus.

UPSA eventually missed a crucial penalty, allowing UENR to secure a 5–4 victory and eliminate the hosts from the competition.

The result marks another major step in UENR’s football campaign as the team continues its impressive run at the ongoing Mini GUSA Games.
