The Shama District Assembly on Monday, 17 August 2026, organized Day One of a Next Generation Leadership Training Programme for its Assembly Members, as part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity and promote effective local governance within the District.

The training, which forms part of the Certificate Course on Next Generation Local Governance Leadership, is being facilitated by the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).

The programme is designed to equip Members of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with the knowledge, competencies and skills required to effectively perform their roles and responsibilities within Ghanaโ€™s decentralised local governance system.

FOCUS OF DAY ONE

Day One focused on enhancing participantsโ€™ understanding of decentralisation and the local governance framework, while strengthening their capacity to effectively discharge their responsibilities as Assembly Members.

Participants were taken through key aspects of their deliberative, legislative, representative, executive and oversight responsibilities, with emphasis on the importance of effective leadership in promoting responsive and accountable local governance.

The sessions also highlighted the importance of community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement and effective communication in ensuring meaningful participation of citizens in local development.

The training further seeks to expose participants to career opportunities in local governance and prepare them for future leadership roles in national development. It also provides an opportunity for Assembly Members to build networks, share experiences and enhance their personal and professional development.

Day One provided a valuable platform for the Assembly Members to reflect on their leadership responsibilities and the critical role they play in representing their constituents and contributing to the development of the Shama District.

The Shama District Assembly remains committed to continuous capacity building and professional development of its Assembly Members as part of its broader efforts to strengthen local governance and accelerate sustainable development in the District.

The Shama District Assembly has been honoured with a Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Proactive Publication by the CoST Infrastructure Transparency Initiative in recognition of its outstanding commitment to the proactive publication of infrastructure information in accordance with the CoST Infrastructure Data Standard (IDS).

This prestigious award acknowledges the Assembly's dedication to promoting transparency, accountability, and public access to infrastructure information, ensuring that citizens are well-informed about public infrastructure projects and the use of public resources.

The recognition was presented in July 2026 during the launch of CoST's Third Independent Review Report on infrastructure transparency across the 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Western Region.

The report, which assessed 28 public infrastructure projects over a five-month period through data collection, analysis, validation, and field verification, highlighted transparency gaps, delays in information disclosure, and quality assurance concerns in several assemblies. Despite these regional challenges, the Shama District Assembly distinguished itself through its commitment to proactive disclosure of infrastructure information, earning this special recognition for excellence.

This achievement reflects the Assembly's unwavering commitment to good governance, openness, and responsible public service, while strengthening public confidence in infrastructure development and project implementation.

The Shama District Assembly remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of transparency and accountability in delivering quality infrastructure for the benefit of its people.

Congratulations to the Management, Staff, and Stakeholders of the Shama District Assembly on this remarkable achievement!

The forecourt of the Shama District Assembly came alive with patriotic spirit as the district commemorated Ghanaโ€™s 69th Independence Day with a modest but colourful ceremony.

The celebration featured impressive parades by the Shama Senior High School Cadet Corps, the Shama Senior High School Regimented Band, and pupils from Shama Methodist KG, who displayed discipline and patriotism through well-coordinated marching performances.

Adding a historical touch to the celebration, pupils from Shama Methodist KG performed a short drama illustrating how Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghanaโ€™s independence, reenacting the historic moment that ushered the nation into freedom.

Pupils from the Shama School for the Deaf also captivated the audience with a dignified cultural dance and drama performance, proudly showcasing Ghanaโ€™s rich cultural heritage and the remarkable talents of the students.

The event was attended by a few Assembly Members and other key stakeholders who gathered to commemorate the nationโ€™s independence and reflect on the countryโ€™s journey since attaining freedom.

Delivering the keynote address was the District Chief Executive, Paul Otis Dentu. In his address, he encouraged citizens to remain united and committed to the development of the district and the nation, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in building prosperity and restoring hope for future generations.

The celebration served as a moment of reflection on Ghanaโ€™s progress and a renewed call for citizens to actively contribute to the continued growth and development of the nation.
