The forecourt of the Shama District Assembly came alive with patriotic spirit as the district commemorated Ghanaโ€™s 69th Independence Day with a modest but colourful ceremony.

The celebration featured impressive parades by the Shama Senior High School Cadet Corps, the Shama Senior High School Regimented Band, and pupils from Shama Methodist KG, who displayed discipline and patriotism through well-coordinated marching performances.

Adding a historical touch to the celebration, pupils from Shama Methodist KG performed a short drama illustrating how Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghanaโ€™s independence, reenacting the historic moment that ushered the nation into freedom.

Pupils from the Shama School for the Deaf also captivated the audience with a dignified cultural dance and drama performance, proudly showcasing Ghanaโ€™s rich cultural heritage and the remarkable talents of the students.

The event was attended by a few Assembly Members and other key stakeholders who gathered to commemorate the nationโ€™s independence and reflect on the countryโ€™s journey since attaining freedom.

Delivering the keynote address was the District Chief Executive, Paul Otis Dentu. In his address, he encouraged citizens to remain united and committed to the development of the district and the nation, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in building prosperity and restoring hope for future generations.

The celebration served as a moment of reflection on Ghanaโ€™s progress and a renewed call for citizens to actively contribute to the continued growth and development of the nation.

The Management of the Shama District Assembly has held a strategic meeting to deliberate on the development of Shama as a result of the Big Push Project.

During the meeting, Management indicated that the Assembly, in collaboration with key service providers, Nananom, and the leadership of Inchaban, is working tirelessly to facilitate the relocation of traders from the current Inchaban market to a newly developed site. This relocation forms part of broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and promote sustainable economic growth within the district.

In a detailed presentation, the District Physical Planner highlighted that all major technical considerations, including hydro systems, electrical installations, fire safety mechanisms, and sanitation systems, have been adequately incorporated into the project design. These measures are intended to ensure safety, proper hygiene, efficiency, and a conducive trading environment for the people of Shama. She further noted that all relevant departments and agencies are working assiduously to ensure the successful ex*****on of the project. However, she identified funding as the primary challenge and emphasized the need for innovative strategies to mobilize additional resources to complete the development. She expressed appreciation to members for their valuable contributions and commitment thus far.

The District Chief Executive of the Shama District Assembly reaffirmed the Assemblyโ€™s commitment to prioritizing the economic well-being of its residents. He stressed the importance of providing a peaceful and well-structured trading space to enable traders to conduct their businesses effectively and improve their livelihoods. He assured Management that every necessary measure would be taken, in collaboration with stakeholders and service providers, to ensure that traders are provided with a suitable and secure place of business.

The District Chief Executive further assured members that adequate sensitization and education would be carried out to ensure that market women and traders are well-informed and prepared for the transition to the new market facility. He reiterated his commitment to fostering collaboration and creating an enabling environment that supports trade, development, and improved living standards for the people of Shama.

The Shama District Assembly has held its first District Market Committee Meeting for the year 2026 to address market development, trader welfare, and resettlement issues within the district.

Opening the meeting, the Coordinating Director briefed members on the ongoing Big Push Project, specifically the Takoradiโ€“Cape Coast Dualization. He explained that due to the dualization works, some market traders will have to be relocated, making the role of the Market Committee very critical. He added that the committeeโ€™s mandate also covers the proposed 24-hour market, market expansion, and other welfare-related matters.

He further informed the committee that the Assembly has secured land for the development of a new market to expand existing facilities and relocate traders from the Inchaban Old Market. He stressed that the committee will oversee the resettlement process, engage stakeholders, and ensure peace and order, noting that the market belongs to the Assembly and must therefore be properly managed.

The Physical Planner stated that the development and resettlement process will be carried out in phases through the formation of sub-committees responsible for information dissemination, sanitation, resettlement design, and on-site implementation. She emphasized the need for early action and close collaboration with traditional authorities to ensure a smooth and peaceful relocation process.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment from all committee members to work collaboratively to ensure the smooth relocation of affected market traders and the successful implementation of market development initiatives. The Assembly reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and the promotion of peace and orderly development throughout the resettlement and market management process

Demolition of temporary structures has begun today in Shama as part of the Governmentโ€™s Big Push Project aimed at dualizing the Takoradiโ€“Cape Coast road. The exercise is intended to clear the right-of-way to allow for smooth and timely construction of the dual carriageway, a key infrastructure initiative expected to transform transportation along the coastal corridor.

The demolition, being carried out by relevant state agencies in collaboration with the Shama District Assembly and security services, follows prior notices and engagements with affected occupants. Officials have emphasized that the process is being conducted in an orderly manner to ensure safety and minimize inconvenience to residents and traders.

When completed, the Takoradiโ€“Cape Coast dualization is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, and ease traffic congestion. The project is also anticipated to boost economic activities, facilitate trade, and enhance access to social services for communities along the route.

Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with authorities as work progresses to ensure the successful and timely delivery of the project.
