WHY IS VIRAL HEPATITIS A PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM?

Viral hepatitis B and C is a leading infectious killer, yet the majority of global leaders and the public remain unaware.
b. Viral hepatitis B and C affect 325 million people worldwide, leading to about 1.4 million deaths a year.
c. It is the second major killer infectious disease after tuberculosis, and 9 times more people are infected with hepatitis than HIV.
d. Deaths from hepatitis have been increasing over the past 2 decades, which points to a lack of global awareness and action, including among top decision-makers.
e. Ghana belongs to the areas where the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection is high (≥8%) and that of hepatitis C virus is also high (5-10%).
f. Data from our health facilities in Ghana indicates that between 2014 and 2018, a total of 117,905 Viral Hepatitis cases were seen out of which 421 died.

HOW DO YOU GET VIRAL HEPATITIS?
d. You can get Hepatitis A and E virus by eating or drinking contaminated food or water
e. You can get Hepatitis B, C and D viruses by;
i. From infected mother to child during delivery
ii. Having unprotected s*x with infected person
iii. Men who have s*x with men: homos*xuals
iiii. Sharing drug needles with an infected person
v. Sharing toothbrushes, razors or such personal care items with an infected person.
vi. Getting pricked with a needle that has infected blood on it (especially for health workers).
vii. Tattooing, body piercing with unsterilized instruments

VIRAL HEPATITIS: WHAT CAN BE DONE?
a. Hepatitis can be prevented, diagnosed, treated and managed well.
b. The hepatitis B vaccine is 98-100% effective in preventing new infections.
c. For hepatitis B, people should be tested and if found positive and eligible, provided with lifelong treatment.
d. For hepatitis C, people can be cured with a simple 2-3 month treatment with direct acting antiviral (DAA) drugs.
i. However, most of the people living with hepatitis--over 80%--lack access to testing or treatment.
ii. At the same time, people are becoming newly infected due to a lack of prevention services. Together, hepatitis B and C account for the highest number of new infections from among other major infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM GETTING VIRAL HEPATITIS B and C?
f. Knowing whether you are infected by getting tested. Early testing means early treatment to prevent illness and to save your life.
g. Get vaccinated for hepatitis B if you test negative. Hepatitis B vaccine provides lifelong protection.
h. Seek treatment at the nearest health facility if you test positive
i. Vaccinate your child, vaccination is free for all children under one year
j. Avoid sharing sharps
k. Use sterile, single-use syringes
l. All our health facilities should ensure that blood transfusions, injections and medical procedures are safe and free from hepatitis B and C
m. Practice safe s*x using barrier methods such as latex condoms every time you have s*x.
n. Avoid multiple s*xual partners
o. Hepatitis B and C can be transmitted by s*x, therefore protect yourself by using condoms.
p. If you tested positive, ask whether you need treatment – do not delay.
q. Do not share personal care items such as razors, toothbrushes, needles etc.
r. Consider the risk if you are thinking about tattooing or piercing any part of your body. Only use sterile instrument if you have to.
s. If you have or had Hepatitis B or C, do not donate blood, organs or tissue.
t. There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C. Limit exposure to infection.
u. If you are pregnant you should get tested for Hepatitis B and C. Knowing your status may help prevent your newborn baby from being infected. It will also inform management for you and your child.
