Autism Compassion Africa Providing breakthroughs for children with autism and their communities in Ghana

A new school year brings new routines, new learning, new friendships, and new opportunities to grow. đź’™

For some children with autism, transitioning back to school may take a little extra preparation and support.

Here are a few ways families can help:

🗓️ Prepare for the routine - talk about what the school day will look like.
🎒 Practise school routines - getting dressed, packing a bag, following instructions, and transitioning between activities.
🏫 Visit or familiarise your child with the school environment where possible.
đź’¬ Use visual supports to help make expectations and routines easier to understand.
đź’™ Be patient with the transition every child adjusts at their own pace.

Remember, successful transitions are built with preparation, patience and support.

Welcome back to school!

Small skills. Big progress!

A few days ago, we worked on peeling cell tape from a ball. Today, we’re seeing that same skill show up in a new and meaningful way- peeling a banana! 🍌

This is more than just peeling. It’s about building fine motor skills, coordination, independence, and most importantly, generalization using a learned skill across different materials and everyday activities.

Progress doesn’t always look big. Sometimes, it looks like a child doing something independently that they couldn’t do before.

Every skill learned is a step toward greater independence.

Modeling is a teaching strategy where a therapist demonstrates a skill or behavior for the child to observe before encouraging them to try it independently.

By seeing the action first, children have a clear example to imitate, making learning more engaging and effective.

Sometimes the best way to teach… is to go first.
