The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has disclosed that steady progress is being made towards the establishment of a medical school at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and medical education in the region.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College on Thursday, June 4, the Minister said plans are also underway to upgrade the War Memorial Hospital and the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital into teaching hospitals.
According to him, the initiatives will create a strong ecosystem for medical education, research, specialist healthcare delivery, and professional training in the region.
“Of particular significance is the steady progress being made towards the establishment of a Medical School at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences. Complementing this effort are plans to upgrade the War Memorial Hospital and the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital into teaching hospitals,” he stated.
Hon. Atanga noted that the interventions form part of a broader national vision to build a resilient healthcare system, create opportunities for young health professionals, and develop the human capital needed to drive Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
He said the government remains committed to strengthening the country’s health workforce through investments in health education, infrastructure, and workforce development.
The Regional Minister further highlighted ongoing efforts under the government’s healthcare agenda, including the expansion of primary healthcare systems, the establishment of clinics, emergency response centres, maternal and child health facilities, and occupational health units.
Addressing the newly admitted students, he urged them to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to excellence throughout their training.
He described nursing and midwifery as noble professions founded on service, compassion, integrity, and sacrifice, stressing that the quality of Ghana’s healthcare system depends largely on the competence and dedication of its health workforce.
The ceremony marked the formal admission of a new cohort of students into the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College.
