The final batch of 41 Ghanaians been evacuated by Government of Ghana from South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks in that country arrived on Friday 4th September 2026.

This brings a conclusion to the Ghana Government’s evacuation exercise. This was disclosed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa when he met the evacuees on arrival at the Accra International Airport.

Through this exercise, which started in May, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has evacuated nearly 1,900 Ghanaian citizens who voluntarily registered to be brought home. The remains of two Ghanaians who were unfortunately attacked and killed were also repatriated, while one returnee died upon arrival in Accra, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in connection with the evacuation exercise to three.

Addressing the final batch of 41 returnees, the Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his untiring commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaians anywhere in the world. He urged them not to lose hope, but rather to remain resilient and channel their time, skills and energy towards building a better Ghana.

The Minister further emphasised that, beyond the reintegration allowance provided by the Government, every returnee must prioritise their health and seek medical attention whenever necessary as they begin the process of rebuilding their lives back home.

Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide a full account of all funds expended throughout the evacuation process.

He finally expressed gratitude to the various allied agencies, and private-sector partners whose support contributed to the successful evacuation exercise.

Government repatriates body of Ghanaian killed in South Africa

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has repatriated the body of Nash Amoonu Jailor, a 37-year-old Ghanaian who was killed in an alleged mob attack in March 2026 at East London in South Africa.

The body arrived in Ghana on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 3 P.M., and was subsequently handed over to his family officially.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of its support. He also urged the family to remain strong during this difficult period.

The repatriation was undertaken at no cost to the family, with the government covering the associated expenses.

Through the Ghanaian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, the government continues to call for a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jailor’s death and for justice to be served.

The Government of Ghana remains committed to protecting the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.

41 MORE GHANAIANS EVACUATED HOME FROM SOUTH AFRICA

The Government of Ghana on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2026 evacuated forty-one (41) more Ghanaians affected by the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The returnees were welcomed on arrival at the Accra International Airport by Ambassador Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, Head of Delivery Unit together with a cross section of Directors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials from other institutions including National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Health Service, Port Health Authority, Ghana Red Cross Society and the Ghana Armed Forces.

Ambassador Ntrakwa welcomed the evacuees to Ghana and assured them of the Government’s continued commitment to ensure their welfare, safety and successful reintegration into their communities.

He encouraged the returnees to remain hopeful as they begin a new chapter of their lives and urged them to use their skills, experiences and knowledge productively towards rebuilding their lives and contributing to national development.

He reiterated Government’s commitment to working with relevant institutions and stakeholders to facilitate the reintegration of the returnees and indicated that measures had been put in place to support them in that endeavour.

The returnees, in turn, expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for prioritising their safety and welfare by facilitating their safe return and for the support extended to them throughout the evacuation process.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson (MP), represented the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, at the official inauguration ceremony of the President of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, H.E. Eng. Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, held on Thursday, 3rd September 2026.

He was accompanied by Ghana’s Ambassador to Angola, concurrently accredited to São Tomé and Príncipe, H.E. Mavis Kusorbor, and officials of the Ghana Mission in Luanda.

Ghana hails the groundbreaking report of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which concludes unambiguously that perpetrators of the transatlantic enslavement must provide reparatory justice.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has issued authoritative guidance that States are bound, under the 1965 Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, to provide reparatory justice for the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel slavery. The long-used excuse, that these crimes were lawful when they were committed, no longer holds. The Committee itself calls this a paradigm shift.

Ghana hails the groundbreaking report of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This is the legal foundation beneath the moral authority of Resolution A/RES/80/250. Recognition is becoming obligation. Apology, restitution, compensation and guarantees of non-repetition are no longer matters of goodwill, but of duty.

It is instructive that this report comes at a time President John Mahama has been presenting a comprehensive report at the African Union Extraordinary meeting in Angola on the landmark Ghana-led UN Resolution declaring the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.

President Mahama after convening the Next Steps Summit in Accra is set to host a consequential side event on Restitution in New York during the 81st session of the UNGA next month.

“A crime does not rot." It was in this spirit that Ghana carried the cause of the enslaved to the United Nations. Today that conviction stands affirmed in international law.

Under the visionary leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, African Union Champion for Reparations, and in unity with our kith and kin across the African Union, CARICOM and the diaspora, our just cause advances. The blood that binds us is stronger than the oceans that appeared to separate us.

Justice does not expire with time.

“How can we share Africa’s rich resources for the African young people? This is a new paradigm that we need for our continent” – Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for African leaders to explore ways of sharing the wealth of this continent for the African youth. He made these remarks on Friday 29th August, 2026, when he addressed the African Union Executive Council’s 26th Extraordinary Session on Conflict Resolution and Prevention in Angola
We need to take a new path, he stated.

“We have pursued all these AU paradigms and protocols and convened meetings to recapitalize the Peace Fund. But perhaps what we should begin to recapitalize, in all humility, is our heart and our mindset. Can we be more tolerant of each other? Can we be more compassionate? Can we be more visionary about the root causes of conflict? We can have $1 billion, $10 billion, $100 billion in a Peace Fund, but it will mean nothing if we do not change course, if we do not adopt a new leadership paradigm”.

He referred to last year’s report by the International organization for Migration (IOM) which stated that over 2,180 young Africans died in the Mediterranean looking for greener pastures. He called for the need to recommit to job creation, industrialization, real decentralization, sharing the wealth of this continent; the diamonds, the gold, the bauxite, the oil and gas that we have been blessed with if Africa is to stem this sad and dehumanizing state of affairs.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa posed the question: how can Africa, the richest continent, share these rich resources for the African youth? This is a new paradigm that we need for our continent.

RECOMMIT TO JOB CREATION, INDUSTRIALIZATION, SHARING THE WEALTH OF THIS CONTINENT:

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Friday 29th August, 2026, addressed the African Union Executive Council’s 26th Extraordinary Session on Conflict Resolution and Prevention in Angola, where he called for the need African countries to recommit to job creation, industrialization, real decentralization, sharing the wealth of this continent.

He lamented the sad situation, where, just last month, there were images of over 72,000 of African youth desperately trying to enter Ceuta, Spain, and 111 of them died. He noted that, ‘as we speak, 600 million Africans do not have access to electricity. That is 43% of our population”.

He observed that, only last year, the International organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 2,180 young Africans died in the Mediterranean looking for greener pastures.

To stem this sorry state of affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa called on African leaders “to recommit to job creation, industrialization, real decentralization, and sharing the wealth of this continent; the diamonds, the gold, the bauxite, the oil and gas that we have been blessed with”.

LET US HAVE AN HONEST INTROSPECTION ON THE REAL CAUSES OF CONFLICT IN AFRICA – SAMUEL OKUDZETO ABLAKWA, FOREIGN MINISTER OF GHANA.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Friday 29th August, 2026, addressed the African Union Executive Council’s 26th Extraordinary Session on Conflict Resolution and Prevention in Angola, where he called for an honest introspection on the real causes of conflict.

He demanded an immediate end to the normalization of conflict and extremism on the continent, particularly as we are running out of time in creating a new and transformed Africa. He stated that, “the seats of our continent cannot continue on this tragedy, where we have normalized conflicts, normalized terrorism, violent extremism, and normalized humanitarian crisis. We need to take a new path”.
He urged African leaders to focus attention on the real drivers of conflict being injustice, lack of opportunities for the youth, underdevelopment, corruption, resource exploitation, intolerance, insincerity, and serving as pawns for proxy forces.

He reminded colleague African Foreign Ministers that, the recent depressing images from the avalanche of over 72,000 young Africans who breached fences to enter Ceuta in Spain should bring home the urgency of silencing the guns and an imperative to divert resources from funding conflicts to creating jobs.
