Japanese Language Course at the University of Ghana

We are pleased to share this opportunity to learn Japanese Language at the University of Ghana.
The University of Ghana, with support from the Nippon Foundation, is offering a 4-week Japanese Language Course.

This course provides a great opportunity for beginners to learn:
・Basic Japanese greetings and phrases
・Japanese characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji)
・An introduction to Japanese culture and etiquette

Start Date: 8th September
Registration: ongoing and ends on 7th September
Registration Fee: GHS 100 (Free Tuition)
Venue: ISSER, University of Ghana
Schedule: Tuesdays and Fridays, 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (twice a week)

On July 24, Ambassador Yoshimoto hosted a send-off luncheon for 13 young Ghanaian public officials who will soon depart to study in Japan under the JDS Programme. The JDS Fellows were joined by their supervisors, JDS alumni, representatives of JICA Ghana, and Embassy staff.
In his remarks, Ambassador Yoshimoto congratulated the 13 Fellows on their success and encouraged them to make full use of the opportunity to study in Japan. He noted that the JDS Programme is not only to provide academic opportunities, but also an investment in Ghana’s future, as the Fellows will bring back their new knowledge, ideas and perspectives to contribute to Ghana’s development.
The luncheon was made even more memorable by a choral performance by the JDS Fellows, who sang a Japanese pop song in Japanese language. The performance warmly reflected the Fellows’ enthusiasm for Japan and their commitment to further strengthening the friendship between Ghana and Japan.

7月24日、義本大使は、日本政府の「人材育成奨学計画（JDS）」で日本へ留学するガーナ人若手公務員13名の壮行会を開催しました。この昼食会には、JDSフェローに加え、所属機関関係者、JDS卒業生、JICAガーナ事務所代表及び大使館職員が参加しました。
義本大使は、13名のJDSフェローに対する祝意を表するとともに、日本で学ぶ機会を最大限に活用するよう激励しました。また、JDSプログラムは単なる学業の機会にとどまらずガーナの未来に対する投資である、フェローが新たな知識、アイデア、考え方を持ち帰り、ガーナの発展に貢献することを期待すると述べました。
昼食会の最後には、JDSフェローが日本の歌謡曲を披露しました。この印象的なパフォーマンスは、フェローの日本への関心と、ガーナと日本の友好関係をさらに深めていきたいという思いを示すものとなりました。

【Labone SHS Students and Teachers Visit Ambassador Yoshimoto Following Their Participation in the Japan-Africa Youth Program】
On 16th July, Ambassador Hiroshi Yoshimoto welcomed a delegation of students and teachers from Labone SHS.

As participants in the "Japan-Africa Youth Program" representing Ghana, the delegation experienced student exchanges in Tokyo and Hokkaido, as well as a homestay in Takikawa City. During their stay, they took part in a wide range of programs, including cultural experiences such as Zazen (Zen meditation), tea ceremony, and Kimono fitting, alongside facility tours of Royce' Cacao & Chocolate Town and a local waste treatment plant.

They visited the Embassy to share the wonderful and eye-opening experiences, as well as the fruitful exchanges, they had during their stay in Japan. Recounting their journey with great enthusiasm, they expressed their readiness to implement and practice what they have learned within their noble institution and future careers.

【日・アフリカ青少年プログラムで日本を訪問したラボネ高校の生徒・教員による大使表敬訪問】
7月16日、義本大使は、ラボネシニアハイスクール（Labone SHS）の生徒および教員からなる訪問団を迎えました。
「日・アフリカ青少年プログラム」にガーナ代表として参加した同訪問団は、東京や北海道での学生間交流に加え、滝川市でのホームステイを経験しました。その滞在中には、座禅や茶道、着物体験といった伝統文化に触れたほか、ロイスカカオ＆チョコレートタウンやごみ処理施設の施設見学など、多岐にわたるプログラムを経験しました。
今回の表敬訪問は、日本滞在中の素晴らしい経験や、視野の広がる交流の成果を報告するために行われました。生徒たちは熱意を込めて日本での思い出を語り、日本で学んだことを今後の学校生活やキャリアにおいて実践・導入していく強い意欲を示しました。

On 25th June, Ms Violet Amoabeng, the Visionary founder of Skin Gourmet, paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Yoshimoto. Skin Gourmet is making strides with their groundbreaking 'edible skincare' philosophy.

During the meeting, Ambassador and Ms Amoateng discussed the power of sustainable entrepreneurship, empowering local communities and exploring exciting avenues for future collaborations and cultural exchange.

6月25日、Skin Goumet（スキン・グルメ）の創設者であるヴァイオレット・アモアベン氏が表敬訪問されました。
スキン・グルメは、「食べられる（ほど純粋な）スキンケア」という革新的な理念を掲げ、今、ガーナで最も注目されている企業です。
義本大使とアモアベン氏は、持続可能な起業家精神の可能性、地域コミュニティ活性化、そして将来の協力関係や文化交流に向けた様々な可能性について意見を交わしました。

We are deeply saddened by the devastating floods and heavy rains across Accra and other areas. Our heartfelt sympathies go to families who lost their loved ones, and to everyone affected by the flood.

It is our hope that as many survivors as possible will be rescued from the affected areas, and that recovery will be achieved at the earliest possible time, allowing the people to return to their normal lives as soon as possible.

On 19 June, Ambassador Yoshimoto participated in the launch event of an electric bus project organized by Mago Motors Ltd. The event brought together stakeholders from the private sector, development partners, and academia to promote sustainable transportation solutions.

A notable feature of the project is the unique design of the buses, which incorporates artwork created by students from special needs schools in Ghana. The artwork was developed with the support of JICA initiative and reflects the project’s commitment to social inclusion and community engagement.

The electric buses are repairable in Ghana, mainly with regard to their internal systems, while capacity to handle exterior repairs is expected to be developed gradually. They can also be charged using a standard power outlet. With a basic power supply, the buses can be fully charged in approximately one and a half to two hours, with an estimated driving range of around 35 to 50 km, depending on conditions.

Ambassador Yoshimoto also had the opportunity to test ride the vehicle and observed its quiet operation and comfortable ride quality. The first deployment of the buses is planned at the University of Ghana, where they will be used for campus transportation services.

Japan welcomes initiatives that promote sustainable mobility, local capacity development, and public-private collaboration, and looks forward to continued cooperation with partners working to advance Ghana’s green transportation sector.

6月19日、義本大使は、当地の日系企業であるMago Motors Ltd.主催によるEVバスのローンチイベントに出席しました。本イベントには、民間企業、JICA、学術関係者など幅広い関係者が参加し、EVバスのお披露目や試乗が行われました。

今回披露されたEVバスには、JICA事業の支援を受けて、当地の特別支援学校の生徒たちが制作したアート作品のラッピングが施されています。また、内部システム等を中心にガーナ国内での修理が可能であるとともに、一般的な電源コンセントから充電することも可能です。今後、ガーナ大学に導入され、キャンパス内の移動手段として活用される予定です。

日本大使館として、ガーナにおけるグリーン交通分野の発展に向けた取組を歓迎するとともに、今回のような官民連携を促進する事業が今後も継続し、さらに発展していくことを期待しています。

From June 29 to July 8, 134 high school students from five African nations—Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, and Mozambique—will visit Japan as part of the inspiring "Africa Youth Program."

【From TICAD9 to the Future! Labone SHS Students Visit the Ambassador's Residence Ahead of Their Journey to Japan】
Following the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) held in August 2025, the "Japan-Africa Youth Program," an international exchange initiative promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, is now underway.
Ahead of their highly anticipated departure for Japan, 25 students from Labone Senior High School, who were selected for this program, visited the Ambassador's official residence.
This program is a vitally important initiative aimed at strengthening the future partnership between our two nations. By visiting Japan, these young leaders, who hold the future of Africa in their hands will experience Japanese culture, cutting-edge technology, and engage directly with the local people.
During the send-off ceremony, the Ambassador encouraged the students to cherish every connection and experience they gain in Japan, expressing his high hopes for them to grow into "bridges connecting Japan and Ghana" in the future.
In response, the students enthusiastically shared their goals and what they hope to learn and challenge themselves with during their stay, making the gathering a vibrant and inspiring exchange of ideas.
We look forward to seeing these 25 young Goodwill Ambassador return home with unforgettable experiences and bright inspirations from Japan!

【TICAD9から未来へ！ラボネ高校の学生が訪日前に大使公邸を訪問】
2025年8月に開催された第9回アフリカ開発会議（TICAD9）を契機に、外務省が推進する国際交流事業「アフリカユースプログラム（Japan-Africa Youth Program）」が始動しています。
本プログラムに参加するラボネ高校の生徒25名が、日本への出発を目前に控え、大使公邸を訪問しました。
本プログラムは、アフリカの未来を担う若者たちが日本を直接訪れ、文化や技術、人々と触れ合うことで、将来的な両国のパートナーシップを強固にすることを目的とした極めて重要な取り組みです。
壮行会では、大使から生徒たちへ、今回のプログラムを通じて得られる日本との絆や経験を深く心に刻み、将来「日本とガーナの架け橋」となる存在へと成長してほしいとの激励の言葉が送られました。
生徒たちからは、日本で学びたいことや現地で挑戦したいことなど、熱意溢れる意気込みが次々と語られ、活発な意見交換の場となりました。
25名の若き親善大使たちが、日本で素晴らしい経験を得て帰国することを楽しみにしています！

🎉 Loud Cheers Echoed in Accra! Joint Japan-Netherlands Public Viewing 🇳🇱🇯🇵

Yesterday on June 14, the Embassy of Japan and the Embassy of the Netherlands co-hosted a thrilling World Cup Public Viewing in Accra!

The excitement in the venue reached its peak right from the start with opening remarks by Ambassador Yoshimoto and the Dutch Ambassador Verheul. Throughout the match, supporters from both nations came together, sending passionate cheers to the players in a nail-biting game. It was truly a wonderful event that further deepened the bond between our two countries through the power of sports.
