Energy Commission Highlights Digital Transformation at Energy Sustainability & Leadership Conference

The Energy Commission of Ghana joined stakeholders at the Energy Sustainability & Leadership Conference 2026, where Deputy Executive Secretary Chris Nana Banyin Yalley delivered a keynote on digital transformation in the energy sector, focusing on smart grids, data analytics and automation. Mr Yalley said digitalisation was becoming central to improving the reliability, resilience and efficiency of Ghana's electricity system while enabling better decision-making and regulation.

He noted the sector was shifting from traditional, infrastructure-focused systems toward intelligent networks capable of sensing, learning, predicting and responding to changing energy demands, while underscoring the need for strong cybersecurity, data governance, interoperability and inclusivity as the transformation advances. The conference also covered energy security, corporate governance in energy projects, climate finance and green bonds, and the outlook for Ghana's energy sector toward 2030 and beyond.

Reaffirming the Commission's regulatory commitment, Mr. Yalley described the goal as building a sector that is “smart but secure, innovative but inclusive, digital but dependable.” The conference closed with calls for stronger collaboration among regulators, utilities, technology firms, investors, development partners and consumers to shape a smarter, more resilient and sustainable energy future for Ghana.

Energy Commission Begins Stakeholder Consultations on the Proposed Re-enactment of Act 541

The Energy Commission has begun nationwide stakeholder consultations on the proposed re-enactment of the Energy Commission Act, 1997 (Act 541), to modernise Ghana's energy regulatory framework and strengthen its mandate as the technical regulator of electricity and natural gas. The first engagement, held in Tamale and led by the Legal Unit with the Electricity and Natural Gas Directorate, drew participants from industry, academia, regulatory bodies, the Judiciary, law enforcement, professional associations, consumer groups, and certified electricians.

The proposed law seeks to close gaps in licensing, market regulation, local content, compliance, enforcement, and emerging energy technologies, while strengthening the Commission's governance and creating a more flexible regulatory framework. Deputy Legal Director Cecilia Agbenyega, along with the Director of Electricity and Natural Gas Anthony Bleboo and Acting Head of Energy Efficiency, Emmanuel Boavo Twum, emphasised the need for broad stakeholder input. Participants, including GRIDCo, which called for stronger enforcement, raised issues on compliance, licensing, and inter-institutional coordination.

Consultations continued in Kumasi, with Accra as the final stop, after which the Bill will be reviewed with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Attorney-General's Office before submission to Parliament, a step expected to strengthen Ghana's energy regulatory architecture.

Stakeholders Across Ghana Shape Review of Electrical Wiring Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 2008)

The Energy Commission is drawing on the direct input of stakeholders nationwide as it reviews the Electrical Wiring Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 2008), an exercise aimed at bringing the regulatory framework in line with advances in electrical technology, renewable energy, modern installation practices and international standards, while tackling long-standing implementation and enforcement challenges. As part of the process, the Commission has taken the draft regulations on the road, holding consultations in Ho, Koforidua, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Sunyani, Sefwi-Wiaso and Goaso.

The engagements brought together a broad cross-section of the electrical installation industry, including regulators, utilities, engineers, electricians, contractors, inspectors, traders, emergency services, and other key institutions. Participants have closely scrutinised the draft, raising questions and contributing practical recommendations drawn from their day-to-day experience in the field.

Leading the technical process, Mr Nii Ashong and Mr John Nilimor Bukari say the exercise goes beyond simply amending a legal document. It is, they note, about listening to the people who will implement and work under the regulation, and using their experience to make it safer, more practical and more responsive to the changing needs of Ghana's electrical installation industry. In essence, L.I. 2008 is being reshaped not only by technical expertise, but by the collective experience of stakeholders drawn from across the country.

Energy Commission Engages Participants on EV and Energy Conservation

The Energy Commission engaged participants at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ghana 2026 Logistics and Transport Conference and Annual General Meeting, where the Commission delivered a presentation on energy conservation and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The Commission touched on its role in regulating EV charging infrastructure, noting that a regulation governing the sub-sector is currently before Parliament awaiting passage, in addition to outlining practical measures transport and logistics operators can adopt to conserve energy. It also unpacked the technical dimensions of EV charging infrastructure, touching on standards, grid readiness, and the siting of charging stations along key transport corridors.

The presentation sparked a lively question-and-answer session, with fleet operators, logistics executives, and transport planners probing issues such as the cost implications of EV adoption, the pace of charging station rollout, and how businesses could plan around anticipated policy changes. The Commission's team fielded the questions together, addressing both policy and technical concerns, and were commended by several participants for making a complex subject accessible and practical.

The session underscored the transport and logistics sector's growing stake in Ghana's energy transition, and formed part of the Energy Commission's broader effort to engage professional bodies directly, reinforcing its visibility as a key regulator shaping the country's energy future.

Nigerian Delegation Visits Energy Commission of Ghana on Energy Efficiency Standards

A delegation from Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Power visited the Energy Commission of Ghana for a three-day study tour on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for electrical equipment. The delegation, made up of technical officials, sought to learn from Ghana's experience with MEPS and Energy Labelling programmes.

Welcoming the delegation, the Ag. Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Adwoa Serwa Bondzie, said the Commission was honoured to share its experience, built over years of work on product testing, certification, market surveillance and consumer awareness. She described the visit as reflecting the strong ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to energy efficiency within the ECOWAS region.

Discussions covered Ghana's policy and institutional framework, testing and certification procedures, energy labelling, market surveillance, and border enforcement mechanisms. The engagements also explored stakeholder awareness strategies and lessons from Ghana's journey, offering an opportunity for peer review of Nigeria's own MEPS implementation under its National Energy Transition Plan.
