【Ambassador Yoshimoto Paid a Courtesy Call on Former President Sirleaf】
On July 2, Ambassador Yoshimoto paid a courtesy call on Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
During the meeting, Ambassador Yoshimoto expressed his profound respect for the Former President’s long-standing contributions to strengthening the relationship between Japan and Liberia.
Former President Sirleaf shared the interesting story behind her naming the "Japan Freeway," and discussed her dedicated efforts during her presidency, including anti-corruption measures and the advancement of women's empowerment in Liberia.
It was a truly meaningful opportunity to witness her enduring passion for the nation and to reaffirm the strong ties between our two countries.

7月2日、義本大使はサーリーフ元大統領を表敬訪問しました。
面会の中で、義本大使より、長年にわたる日・リベリア関係へのご尽力とご貢献に対し、深く敬意を表しました。
サーリーフ元大統領からは、かつて同大統領ご自身が命名された「ジャパンフリーウェイ」の由来についてのエピソードが語られました。また、大統領在任中から取り組まれてきた腐敗対策や、女性の地位向上に向けた取り組みについても貴重なお話を伺うことができました。
長きにわたり国を牽引されてきたサーリーフ元大統領の変わらぬ情熱に触れ、改めて二国間の絆を深める大変有意義な機会となりました。

【Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Japan Freeway Extension Project】
On July 3, Ambassador Yoshimoto attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Japan Freeway Extension Project and delivered a speech.
The ceremony was attended by H.E. President Boakai, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nyanti, senior government officials, as well as representatives from JICA, Dai Nippon Construction, Eight-Japan Engineering Consultants, Pacific Consultants, and other stakeholders involved in the project.
In his remarks, Ambassador Yoshimoto expressed his hope that this freeway will serve as a vital artery not only for the greater Monrovia area but also for enhancing connectivity between Liberia and the broader region.
He further emphasized the commitment to providing "Quality Infrastructure" through Japanese technology—focusing on environmental considerations, local job creation, and advanced drainage systems to mitigate flood risks—thereby contributing to the development of local communities and the nation of Liberia as a whole.
We look forward to seeing this project, which paves the way for a brighter future for Liberia, advance significantly together with the local community.

【ジャパンフリーウェイ延伸計画起工式が行われました】
7月3日、義本大使は「ジャパンフリーウェイ延伸計画」の起工式に出席し、スピーチを行いました。
式典には、ボアカイ大統領、ニャンティ外務大臣をはじめとする政府関係者のほか、JICA、大日本土木、エイト日本技術開発、パシフィックコンサルタントなど、本プロジェクトに携わる多くの関係者の皆様にご列席いただきました。
義本大使はスピーチの中で、本フリーウェイがモンロビア首都圏のみならず、近隣諸国とリベリアをつなぐ重要な動脈として、さらなるコネクティビティの向上に寄与することへの期待を語りました。
また、「環境への配慮、現地雇用の創出、そして優れた排水システムによる洪水リスクの軽減など、日本の技術を活かした『質の高いインフラ』を提供することで、地域コミュニティ、ひいてはリベリア全体の発展に貢献していきたい」と意気込みを述べました。
リベリアの未来を拓くこのプロジェクトが、地域の皆様と共に大きく前進することを願っています。

On December 3, 2025, 14:00-15:00, the 2nd Webinar on the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP) will be held. Since its establishment in 2022, the IGEP has offered a forum for its 15 members from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas on achieving a world without nuclear weapons, regardless of their national positions.

This webinar will focus on the recommendations issued at the sixth IGEP meeting and examine concrete pathways towards a world without nuclear weapons, ahead of the upcoming 2026 NPT Review Conference. As panelists, we have invited three members of the IGEP, along with a government official and an expert from overseas.
