ACCRA GIRLS STUDENTS TAKE THE PEACE PLEDGE 🕊️🇬🇭
Hundreds of students of Accra Girls Senior High School have pledged to promote peace in their school, communities and Ghana at large.

The commitment followed a sensitisation by the National Peace Council’s Capacity Development and Outreach Department on conflict prevention and peaceful ways of managing differences.

Director of CDO, Madam Janet Sarney-Kumah, encouraged the students to respect diversity, embrace tolerance and promote peaceful coexistence.

NPC Governing Board Members Madam Georgette Naa Dede Francois and Madam Susan Akosua Aryeetey also urged the students to embrace non-violent approaches to conflict, become ambassadors of peace and remain focused on their studies.

The students actively participated in the engagement, raising questions on conflict, mediation and the role of teachers in managing disputes.

The engagement forms part of the NPC’s nationwide Peace Education Campaign, which seeks to equip young people with the knowledge, values and skills to prevent conflict and build a lasting culture of peace.

“HELP SUSTAIN PEACE IN YOUR SCHOOLS” — NPC CHARGES STUDENTS 🕊️

The National Peace Council, Ghana (NPC) has urged students of Wesley Grammar School to take an active role in sustaining peace in their schools, communities and Ghana at large.

Deputy Director of the NPC’s Capacity Development and Outreach Department, Mr. Henry Attoh Okai, encouraged students to embrace tolerance, respect diverse opinions, reject violence and choose dialogue when faced with disagreements.

He reminded students that peace is a shared responsibility and that their words, actions and choices can either build or undermine peaceful coexistence.

The engagement forms part of the NPC’s School Engagement Programme, which equips young people with the knowledge, values and skills to become active agents of peace.

Be a peace ambassador. Choose dialogue over violence. Respect one another. Speak up for peace. 🕊️🇬🇭

NPC TAKES PEACE CAMPAIGN TO PRESEC-LEGON 🕊️🇬🇭
The National Peace Council (NPC), through its Department of Capacity Development and Outreach (CDO), has taken its peace education campaign to Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, engaging students on the importance of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The Director of CDO, Madam Janet Sarney-Kumah, urged students to respect diversity, embrace tolerance and resolve differences through dialogue and mutual understanding. She also encouraged them to reject violence, bullying, discrimination, hate speech and sexual violence, while remaining focused on their studies.

Leading the students in the Peace Pledge, Madam Sarney-Kumah challenged them to become ambassadors of peace and responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities.

A member of the NPC Governing Board, Mrs. Susan Akosua Aryeetey, also encouraged the students to uphold the values of peace, respect, empathy and discipline.

The students actively participated in the engagement, raising questions on conflict management, mediation and the role of teachers in addressing conflicts among students.

The programme forms part of the NPC’s nationwide peace education campaign aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge, values and skills needed to prevent conflict and build a culture of peace.

INTERIOR MINISTRY DEEPENS FAITH-BASED ENGAGEMENT 🤝🏾🕊️

The Ministry of the Interior, Ghana through the National Peace Council, Ghana, has engaged the Christian Council of Ghana and other Christian Ecclesiastical Groups including the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen interfaith dialogue and prevent tensions arising from recent Muslim-Christian concerns.

The engagement follows an earlier meeting with Muslim leaders and underscores the importance of continuous dialogue, mutual understanding and responsible communication in protecting Ghana’s peace and social cohesion.

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, commended the Christian Council for its cooperation and timely call for calm and de-escalation. He urged religious leaders to use their networks to promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence, interfaith harmony and respect for Ghana’s pluralistic society.

The Acting Chairman of the Christian Council, Bishop Lawson Adjei, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to peace, reconciliation and national unity, and expressed readiness to work with the Ministry, the NPC and other stakeholders to strengthen interfaith harmony.

The engagement provides an opportunity to turn recent religious concerns into dialogue, trust-building and stronger Muslim-Christian relations.

QUEENMOTHERS UNITE FOR PEACE AND EARLY WARNING IN NKWANTA

Queenmothers from the Adele, Challa and Akyode communities in the Oti Region have pledged to strengthen their role in peacebuilding, early warning, reconciliation and community recovery.

The commitment was made during a community dialogue held on 13 August 2026, led by the Oti Regional Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, Mr. Paul Akornor.

The dialogue highlighted the important role of Queenmothers as community leaders and trusted voices who can identify early signs of conflict, promote dialogue and help prevent disputes from escalating.

As part of the way forward, the Queenmothers proposed the establishment of a Joint Queenmothers’ Peace Platform to strengthen coordination and engagement among the three traditional areas. They also committed to promoting forgiveness, discouraging revenge, supporting peaceful dispute resolution and encouraging greater participation of women in peace processes.

Other key proposals included:
🔹 Regular inter-community dialogue and rotational engagements
🔹 Integration of Queenmothers into local early warning systems
🔹 A Peace Walk to promote unity and non-violence
🔹 Increased peace education and advocacy against violence
🔹 Stronger collaboration among traditional authorities, security agencies, local authorities, civil society and the Peace Council

The Oti Regional Peace Council Chairman, Mr. Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae, stressed the need for inclusive peacebuilding, while the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Joseph Antwi Awal, urged Queenmothers to deepen their contribution to reconciliation and community recovery.

The dialogue reaffirmed that women, particularly Queenmothers, are not merely beneficiaries of peace but key actors in preventing conflict, promoting reconciliation and rebuilding communities.

The National Peace Council, through the Oti Regional Peace Council, remains committed to supporting inclusive and sustainable peacebuilding efforts across the region.

Peace is everyone’s responsibility. When communities unite, peace becomes possible.

Empowering Local Leaders to Prevent Conflict Before It Escalates
40 Assembly Members in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have been equipped with practical skills in peacebuilding, conflict analysis and early warning to strengthen peaceful and effective local governance.

The training, held on 11 August 2026 at the Anloga District Assembly Hall, was organised by the Volta Regional Peace Council
The engagement focused on helping Assembly Members better understand the causes, actors and dynamics of conflict, identify early warning signs and respond appropriately to emerging tensions within their communities.

Chairman of the Volta Regional Peace Council, Rev. Seth K. Mawutor, reminded participants that peace goes beyond the absence of conflict and requires justice, dignity, understanding and respect. He urged Assembly Members to listen to their constituents, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and address tensions before they escalate.

The Regional Executive Secretary, Dr. David Esinu Yao Normanyo, encouraged participants to understand a conflict before attempting to intervene. He emphasised the importance of verifying information, recognising institutional mandates, applying the “Do No Harm” principle and using appropriate referral mechanisms when dealing with sensitive disputes.

The training also underscored the important role of Assembly Members as community-level actors who are often among the first to encounter emerging tensions. Participants were therefore encouraged to work closely with traditional authorities, security agencies, community leaders and relevant institutions to strengthen early warning and conflict prevention.

The National Peace Council believes that effective peacebuilding starts where people live and interact every day. Strengthening the capacity of local leaders is therefore essential to preventing conflicts, promoting social cohesion and creating communities where development can thrive.

🇬🇭 NPC Convenes Inter-Party Dialogue to Strengthen Ghana’s Democratic Peace

The National Peace Council, Ghana in partnership with CRS Ghana, CDD-Ghana - Ghana Center for Democratic Development, the National Media Commission (NMC) and UNDP Ghana, has convened an Inter-Party Dialogue to Foster Social and Sustainable Democracy in Accra.

The dialogue brought together representatives of political parties, the Electoral Commission, media associations and other key governance stakeholders to reflect on Ghana’s democratic journey, lessons from previous elections and practical ways to sustain peace.

Key discussions focused on:

🔹 Strengthening inter-party dialogue and trust
🔹 Promoting responsible political communication
🔹 Addressing inflammatory rhetoric and media excesses
🔹 Strengthening cooperation on peace and electoral security
🔹 Preventing political tensions from undermining social cohesion

The dialogue forms part of the broader Political Party Trust Building Programme, consensually adopted as one of the Ada Recommendations to enhance dialogue, trust and consensus-building among political parties and key governance actors.

For the NPC, Ghana’s democratic resilience goes beyond conducting credible elections. It also depends on our collective ability to manage differences peacefully, communicate responsibly and keep channels of dialogue open before, during and after elections.
