The President of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency John Dramani Mahama received players and staff from Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa ladies FC at the Flag staff house.

The President also presented them with cash prices of Three Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 342,000.00) to Medeama SC, Two Hundred and Twenty-Eight Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 228,000.00) to Nations FC and One Hundred and Fourteen Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 114,000.00) to Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC to supports them in their campaign this season.

In attendance also was a team from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation led by the Chief Director Ms. Fati Lily Soale.

PROFESSOR KORYOE ANIM-WRIGHT, THE CHAIR OF THE SPORTS FUND BOARD, PRESENTED AS NAA PROFESSOR ASHONG ABABIO DZAASE NYE I OF THE ABOLA TRADITIONAL COUNCIL

Professor Koryoe Anim-Wright, the Chair of the Sports Fund Board, has been officially introduced to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in her new role as Naa Professor Ashong Ababio Dzaase Nye I of the Abola Traditional Council.

She was presented by NII Kofi Otuadan III, Paramount Chief of the Abola Traditional Area. NII Kofi Otuadan III explained that the Abola Traditional Area comprises of seven clans and fifty-six villages. Historically, the area, formerly known as Aprang or Ablaŋ, was an early coastal fishing settlement linked to the ancient Ga Kingdom of Ayawaso.

During the introduction, NII Kofi Otuadan III expressed appreciation to Hon. Kofi Adams and his team for their warm reception. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to develop sports in Ghana, highlighting boxing as a key sport in his traditional area.

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adam congratulated Professor Koryoe Anim-Wright and now Naa Professor Ashong Ababio Dzaase Nye I. He noted that Professor Anim-Wright’s exemplary service in the sports sector has earned her widespread admiration across Ghana. He expressed optimism that her new traditional leadership role will foster stronger partnerships to advance sports development nationwide.

In response, Naa Professor Ashong Ababio Dzaase Nye I conveyed her gratitude for the Ministry’s support. She affirmed that her commitment to serving as Chair of the Sports Fund remains unchanged. She also stated that her new role as a traditional leader will help strengthen bonds and promote greater collaboration in sports development across Ghana.

ACCRA TURF CLUB PRESENTS PETITION TO MINISTER FOR SPORTS OVER FORCEFUL TAKEOVER OF RACECOURSE

The Accra Turf Club has formally petitioned the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, regarding a recent disturbing incident at the Borteyman Race Course. The club’s chairman, Mr. Frederick Nuer, briefed the Minister about a forceful entry, demolition, and takeover of the racecourse that occurred on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

According to Mr. Nuer, approximately 200 armed men, led by individuals identifying themselves as Clement Dzato and another known as Azuma, forcefully entered the premises of the Accra Race Course located near Borteyman Stadium. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of the historic racing facility.

The chairman provided background on the significance of horse racing in Accra, which dates back to 1876, with the Accra Turf Club officially established in 1923. He emphasized that the current racecourse at Borteyman was developed following a relocation from its original site, which now hosts prominent landmarks such as the National Security Secretariat and Kempinski Hotel. This move was facilitated by a 2006 agreement with the government, supported by a court order in 2005 that recognized the club’s right to occupy 46.64 hectares of land in the Borteyman enclave.

Hon. Adams expressed gratitude to the club for its efforts in maintaining the green sport and Ghana’s sporting cultural heritage over the past years.

He described the demolition incident as unfortunate. He assured the club of his commitment to collaborate with relevant state institutions to resolve the matter promptly and to ensure the sustainability of livelihoods associated with the club.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of preserving natural environments and sports facilities as part of Ghana’s response to climate change. He revealed that the government has acquired substantial land within the Borteyman area and is planning to develop it into a sports village, further emphasizing the government’s support for sports development and recreational spaces.

MANAGEMENT OF DANSOMAN KEEP FIT CLUB CALLS ON MINISTER FOR SPORTS AND RECREATION

The management of the Dansoman Keep Fit Club paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, to discuss key issues affecting the community-based fitness group.

Led by the Vice Chairman of the club, Mr. Laud Thompson, the delegation expressed their appreciation to the Minister for his unwavering commitment to promoting recreational activities across Ghana. Established in 1983 and located on Carl Reindoff Street in Dansoman, the club has been a vital part of the community’s health and social fabric for decades.

During the visit, the Dansoman Keep Fit Club announced that their flagship event, the annual Accra Marathon, is scheduled to take place on November 14th. The event is seen as a significant opportunity to foster health awareness, unity, and tourism within the city.

The club leadership also took the opportunity to highlight a pressing concern-the dilapidated condition of their recreational field, where various community groups participate in sports and leisure activities. They appealed to the Minister for assistance in rehabilitating the field, proposing the installation of an Astroturf surface to enhance usability, especially during the rainy season.

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams responded warmly to their concerns, praising the club for safeguarding their recreational space from encroachment. “It’s commendable how you have maintained your space and promoted community spirit,” he said. The Minister emphasized the importance of Keep Fit Clubs as key stakeholders in Ghana’s sports and recreation sector.

He further acknowledged the crucial role these clubs play in promoting overall wellness and preventive health strategies among citizens. “The Ministry recognizes and appreciates the vital contribution of Keep Fit Clubs. We are committed to fostering greater collaboration to ensure that the health and well-being of every community are prioritized,” he stated.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to supporting community sports initiatives, emphasizing that active lifestyles and community participation remain central to Ghana’s national health objectives.

KNUST AND SPORTS MINISTRY FORGE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO BOOST SPORTS ECONOMY AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are set to deepen their collaboration to harness the full potential of Ghana’s sports sector. This follows a meeting between the University’s leadership and the Hon. Minister for Sports, Kofi Iddie Adams, where strategic plans to develop sports as a key economic driver were discussed.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Christian Agyare, expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s collaborative spirit and acknowledged Hon. Adams’ dedication to advancing Ghana’s sports sector. Professor Agyare revealed that the University is developing a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at nurturing sports talents through a multi-layered network. The initiative emphasizes not only talent identification and development but also the commercialization of sports, positioning Ghana to tap into the burgeoning sports economy.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the University’s role in fostering sports development. Professor Agyare highlighted KNUST’s commitment to establishing a well-structured system that integrates science and research into sports, thereby creating a data-driven sector capable of attracting investment.
Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams expressed his satisfaction with KNUST’s proactive approach and praised the University for taking up the challenge to explore the sports economy, a relatively underdeveloped area in Ghana. He emphasized that sports must be backed by scientific research to maximize benefits and called for the creation of opportunities for individuals with sports backgrounds to pursue higher education alongside their athletic pursuits. “Sports must be backed with science,” he stated, urging the University to develop programs that allow athletes to explore alternative careers while honing their sports potential.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of formalizing pathways for talented athletes, encouraging the University to collaborate with sports funding agencies to offer scholarships to promising sports talents.

The Hon. Minister highlighted the draft National Sports Policy, inviting KNUST as a key stakeholder in upcoming consultations. He stressed the urgency of establishing systems that will enable Ghana to capitalize on its abundant sports talent and economic opportunities.
