ROAD TO LA28: GHANA’S PARA POWERLIFTERS HIT RUSSIA AS SAMSON DEEN’S “TARGET THE PODIUM” PROJECT GATHERS MOMENTUM

NPC Ghana President Samson Deen Sponsors team Ghana’s Para Powerlifting Team to Russia for the 2026 International Para Powerlifting Competition as part of the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana’s “Target the Podium” Initiative.

The five-member delegation includes athletes Francis Kwaku, Nfodzo Patrick and Obeng Samuel, alongside coaches Toulassi Frank and Oheneadu George.

The Russia competition, taking place 8–9 August 2026, is designed to give the athletes valuable international experience, strengthen their technical and competitive skills, and prepare them for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games (LA28).

The broader Target the Podium programme aims to move Ghana beyond participation at major competitions by developing athletes capable of challenging for Paralympic medals through sustained international exposure, coaching and preparation.

The message is simple: Ghana is not preparing for LA28 just to participate — Ghana is preparing to compete for the podium.

Raphael Botsyo Calls for More Investment in Para-Athlete Preparation

Ghanaian wheelchair racer Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe has urged the Government of Ghana to shift focus from post-competition bonuses to investing more in athlete preparation.

Following his Men’s 1500m T54 Final appearance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Botsyo said: “I’d prefer Government invest $9,000 in my preparation and give me $1,000 if I win gold.”

The veteran para-athlete stressed that better funding for training, specialised equipment, sports science support and international exposure would give Ghana’s athletes a stronger chance of winning medals.

After over two decades representing Ghana, Botsyo revealed that athletes often struggle to finance their own equipment and called for a long-term approach to sports development.

He praised the support from the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana and encouraged continued investment ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

NPC Ghana Strengthens Technical Expertise at 2026 IPC Classification Meeting

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana has reinforced its commitment to developing Para sport by sponsoring Dr. Eric Tetteh Ayertey to represent Ghana at the 2026 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Annual Classification Meeting in Bonn, Germany.

Sponsored under the leadership of NPC Ghana President Samson Deen, Dr. Ayertey participated in technical workshops, policy discussions and networking sessions aimed at advancing athlete classification and strengthening international collaboration.

NPC Ghana says the knowledge gained will improve Ghana’s classification system, develop local technical experts and enhance athlete services in line with international standards.

President Deen emphasized that investing in medical, classification and anti-doping expertise is just as important as preparing elite athletes, adding that the Committee will continue supporting international education and certification opportunities as part of its long-term vision for a stronger Paralympic movement.

The participation marks another step in NPC Ghana’s preparations for major international events, including the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

Hayford Addai Breaks 11-Second Barrier at Glasgow 2026 Despite Missing Podium

Glasgow, Scotland | 29 July 2026

Ghana's rising para-athletics sensation Hayford Addai delivered an outstanding performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, producing a lifetime best of 10.99 seconds to finish fifth in the fiercely contested Men's 100m T47 final.

The 17-year-old sprinter entered the championship with a personal and season's best of 11.09 seconds, but rose to the occasion on one of the biggest stages in para-sport by slicing 0.10 seconds off his previous mark and becoming the first Ghanaian T47 sprinter to officially break the 11-second barrier.

The race was won by India's Dilip Mahadu Gavit, with compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath claiming silver to complete an impressive Indian one-two finish, while England's Kevin Santos secured the bronze medal.

Although Addai narrowly missed out on a place on the podium, his performance has been widely hailed as one of Ghana's brightest moments of the Games. Competing at his first Commonwealth Games, the young sprinter demonstrated remarkable composure and determination against an elite international field.

Addai's progress over the past year has been exceptional. Earlier this season, he captured gold at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai with a time of 11.09 seconds before continuing his impressive form with another gold-medal performance in Rabat to qualify for Glasgow. His latest performance confirms his rapid development into one of Africa's most promising para-athletes.

His performance is expected to provide a major confidence boost as he prepares for future international competitions, including the World Para Athletics Championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
