ACCRA HOSTED THE SAFE AFRICAN HELMETS INITIATIVE SUMMIT 2026

Accra, Ghana, hosted the third Safe African Helmets Initiative Summit from August 19 to 21, bringing together countries and road safety stakeholders from across Africa to promote safer motorcycle mobility.

Organised by the FIA Foundation, in partnership with Transaid and the NRSA, the summit provided a platform for participants to share technical knowledge, practical experiences and solutions aimed at ensuring that everyone, everywhere, can ride safely.

The opening ceremony featured a keynote address by the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, with remarks from the Chief of Staff to the President of Ghana, Hon. Julius Debrah, and the FIA Foundation’s Programmes Director, Aggie Krasnolucka.

The summit reinforced the importance of stronger helmet standards, effective road-safety policies and sustained collaboration to protect motorcycle riders across Africa.

A major step towards safer roads and more confident travel has been taken with the launch of the Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project in Accra.

Led by the Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association [GHATEX] in collaboration with the NRSA, the Ghana Tourism Authority [GTA] and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts [MOTCCA], the five-year national initiative will use public education and behavioural change campaigns to promote responsible road use.

Animated videos, drama sketches and multilingual educational messages will help make road safety information accessible to communities across Ghana.

Together, we can make every road journey safer for residents, domestic tourists and international visitors.

Ahead of the 2026 Safe African Helmet Initiative (SAHI) Summit in Accra, key stakeholders met to advance the adoption of safer motorcycle helmet standards in Ghana.

Led by the NRSA, the FIA Foundation, and Transaid, the engagements brought together representatives from government, law enforcement, the transport sector, industry, and civil society, reaffirming a shared commitment to reducing motorcycle-related deaths and serious injuries through coordinated action.

FIA Foundation and Transaid Advance Preparations for 2026 SAHI Summit in Accra.

As part of efforts toward the successful hosting of the 2026 Safe African Helmet Initiative (SAHI) Summit in Accra this August, a high-level delegation from the FIA Foundation and Transaid, led by the Programmes Director Aggie Krasnolucka and the Africa Region Advisor Oliva Nalwadda, paid a working visit to Ghana.

During the visit, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and formally extended an invitation to him to participate in the upcoming summit.

Speaking during the meeting, Ms. Krasnolucka highlighted the FIA Foundation’s commitment to promoting safe, affordable and accessible mobility. She noted that the Foundation’s efforts support the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 per cent by 2030.

Welcoming the delegation, Hon. Bukari Nikpe underscored the critical role of helmet use in safeguarding lives, stressing that increased public awareness and adherence to helmet safety standards could significantly reduce fatalities and serious injuries among road users.

The Minister also announced that the Government is undertaking a nationwide public education campaign on the recently enacted Road Traffic Amendment Act, 2025 (Act 1153) and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519). He further reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the FIA Foundation and Transaid to advance road safety initiatives across the country.

As part of their mission, the delegation, accompanied by officials of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), also paid courtesy visits to the heads of key stakeholder institutions, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Standards Authority, to discuss preparations for the summit and broader road safety interventions.
