🚨 WATER LEVEL UPDATE: BAGRÉ & KOMPIENGA DAMS (As of August 10, 2026) 🚨
The Water Resources Commission (WRC) wishes to share the latest operational update from SONABEL on the water levels for both the Bagré and Kompienga dams in Burkina Faso.
📊 1. BAGRÉ DAM STATUS
Water Level: 233.08 m
Filling Rate: 75.04%
Current Reserve Margin: 1.92 m below normal capacity (235.0 m)
⚠️ Spillage Notice: SONABEL may open the floodgates if the reservoir reaches 234.50 m. Should this threshold be reached, a formal notice with the exact date and time of the release will be issued immediately.
📊 2. KOMPIENGA DAM STATUS
Water Level: 177.50 m
Filling Rate: 75.85%
Current Reserve Margin: 2.50 m below normal capacity (180.0 m)
⚠️ Current Discharge: A spillway has been open at 0.5 m since January 1, 2026, discharging water at a rate of 17.76 m³/s.
🛡️ ADVISORY FOR RIVERINE COMMUNITIES:
All residents, farmers, and stakeholders along the White Volta River basin are urged to remain vigilant, monitor official updates, and take necessary precautions.

Leveraging Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Localized Flood Mitigation

As rapid urbanization increases the footprint of impermeable surfaces like concrete and asphalt, the risk of flash flooding in our communities rises exponentially.

Integrating green infrastructure on our private and public properties is one of the most effective, low-cost strategies to combat this. Keeping natural vegetation, planting deep-rooted shrubs, and maintaining lawns acts as a hydrological buffer.

Why green landscaping matters:

Runoff Reduction: Plants physically slow down the flow of storm runoff, preventing immediate pooling.

Infiltration & Recharge: Healthy soil and root systems allow rainwater to infiltrate the ground safely, replenishing our groundwater aquifers.

Erosion Control: Root systems anchor the soil, preventing structural degradation around properties during heavy downpours.

Sustainable water management begins at home. Let’s design and build with nature in mind.

Leading by Example: WRC Staff Mobilize for Post-Flood National Clean-Up Exercise! 🧹🇬🇭💧

Following the recent severe flooding, staff at the Water Resources Commission (WRC) hit the ground running to participate in the national flood aftermath clean-up exercise. This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to environmental sanitation, public safety, and national development.

The exercise was led by our Director of Finance and Administration, Madam Linda Grace Ennison, who guided staff in thoroughly cleaning and clearing the Commission's enclave in strict compliance with the government’s sanitation directive. Team members worked hard side-by-side—desilting choked gutters, clearing overgrown weeds, collecting litter, and tidying up the entire surrounding environment.

Addressing the team, Madam Linda Grace Ennison encouraged staff to make environmental cleanliness an everyday personal responsibility rather than waiting for a directive to act. She noted that as the state institution mandated to safeguard Ghana's vital water resources, the WRC is perfectly positioned to champion environmental stewardship and inspire the positive behavioral shifts needed to build cleaner, safer, and healthier communities.

Choked drains turn heavy rains into devastating floods. By taking civic responsibility into our own hands, we protect our infrastructure and our neighborhoods. Let’s keep the momentum going! 💪

Advancing Groundwater Security: WRC, WaterAid Ghana, and CONIWAS Partner for the White Volta Basin 💧🇬🇭🛰️

In a major step toward protecting our underground water resources, the Water Resources Commission (WRC), in collaboration with WaterAid Ghana and Coniwas Ghana, has made significant progress on Groundwater Monitoring Framework approach for the White Volta Basin following a productive two-day technical session in Bolgatanga!
The White Volta Basin faces rising threats from climate change, pollution, mining, and unregulated water abstraction. To safeguard this vital resource, experts from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector have agreed on a unified, data-driven path forward.

Key Outcomes of the Session:

📊 Comprehensive Tracking: Establishing a standardized framework to track groundwater quantity/quality across both shallow and deep aquifers.

🌐 Infrastructure Expansion: Installing additional data loggers and creating a centralized database & dashboard for real-time data governance and sharing.

🤝 Inclusive Governance: Strengthening institutional coordination led by the WRC, while integrating community-based monitoring and feedback systems.

📢 Public Engagement: Developing simplified public information tools (infographics and factsheets) to keep local communities informed and involved.

This framework ensures that our groundwater management isn't just reactive, but sustainably financed and scientifically monitored for generations to come. The draft framework will be shared in the coming months for broader stakeholder review and validation.
