PREPARATORY WORKSHOP TO REVIEW SOCIAL WORK PROFESSION BILL ENDS TODAY

The three-day Preparatory Workshop to review the Social Work Profession Bill, organised by the Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), ended today, Thursday, 13th August 2026, in the Volta Region.

The workshop brought together relevant stakeholders and professionals within the social welfare sector to deliberate on the proposed Social Work Profession Bill.

There were detailed discussions and group work sessions focusing on strengthening professional standards, ethical practice, accountability, and the quality of social services provided to individuals, families, and communities. Participants shared experiences and technical perspectives on how the proposed Bill could contribute to the effective regulation and professionalisation of social work in Ghana.

The workshop provided an important platform for stakeholders to examine the Bill from different perspectives and build consensus on issues requiring further consideration before it proceeds to the next stage of the legislative process.

PREPARATORY WORKSHOP TO REVIEW THE SOCIAL WORK PROFESSION BILL UNDERWAY

The Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), with support from UNICEF Ghana is currently holding a three-day preparatory workshop to review the Social Work Profession Bill from Wednesday, 12th to Friday, 14th August 2026, in the Volta Region.

Among other objectives, the workshop seeks to critically examine the proposed Bill and provide inputs towards strengthening its provisions and ensuring that it adequately responds to the needs and realities of social work practice in Ghana.

Stakeholders at the workshop will be taken through the background of the Social Work Profession Bill and engaged in group exercises to review the draft Bill. There will also be discussions on areas requiring clarification, improvement, and further consideration. The sessions will provide participants with an opportunity to share their experiences, identify gaps, and make recommendations aimed at ensuring that the proposed legislation is comprehensive, practical, and responsive to emerging issues within the social services sector.

The review forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to establish an effective legal and regulatory framework for the social work profession. The Bill is expected to provide the necessary legislative backing for the professionalisation, regulation, and development of social work practice while promoting quality standards and ethical conduct among practitioners.

The preparatory workshop, therefore, represents an important step towards the development of a robust legal framework that will support the growth of the social work profession and contribute to the protection and welfare of vulnerable persons across Ghana.
