A delegation from the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), led by Deputy Director General Mubarick Masawudu, recently paid a working visit to the world-renowned Warsash Maritime School at Solent University in Southampton.

This visit, on the sidelines of the annual conference of the International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC), offered a firsthand look at top-tier training frameworks and cutting-edge maritime simulation technology at the school.

According to the DDG, the insights gained would directly feed back into the GMA’s youth outreach, proving that modern maritime careers are highly technical, globally competitive, and open to diverse academic backgrounds.

Mr Masawudu believes that reviewing Warsash School’s highly sophisticated full-mission simulation facilities and modernized curriculum effectively helps identify key global benchmarks to enhance Ghana’s own local seafarer development.

To mark the International Day for Women in Maritime, WISTA Ghana and WIMOWCA Ghana hosted an impactful breakfast session in Accra, bringing together female industry leaders to discuss turning high-level gender inclusion commitments into concrete, daily actions within the maritime and transport industry.

The event also marked WISTA Ghana’s 2026 AGM, ushering in a new executive team led by President Stella Cobbah to steer the association’s affairs for the next two years.

The Governing Board of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has held a sensitisation forum with the Ada East Inland Canoe and Fishermen Association as part of efforts aimed at enhancing water transport safety.

The meeting, which also served as a fact-finding mission for the Board, saw the Chairman of the Association, Ebenezer Ofoe Akpo, highlight pressing concerns regarding the dangerous waves created by high-speed pleasure boats from local resorts operating along the lake in Ada, specifically where the river meets the sea at the estuary.

These wakes, the Association said, frequently destabilize smaller vessels, putting lives at risk. The Director General of the GMA, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt Rtd), assured that the GMA will not only engage resort owners and traditional leaders but also introduce a licensing regime to ensure everyone follows the rules of the water.

In a move under its new "resetting agenda," the Ghana Maritime Authority is decentralising maritime safety by moving beyond the big hubs of Accra, Tema, and Takoradi to establish a permanent presence in high-risk areas across the country.

An exciting part of this initiative is the introduction of the Safety Guard concept with the GMA announcing plans to recruit and train local community members to serve as wardens on our lakes.

These guards, officials say will be on the front lines, monitoring safety standards and ensuring every passenger in the lake transport regime is protected.

The governing board of the GMA during a visit to the Paramount Chief of Ada, Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, and the Ada East District Assembly, emphasized that safety starts with community partnership, thus, the Authority is determined to work with traditional leaders and district assemblies, in building a maritime economy that is formal, secure, and locally driven.

Bridging the Seatime Deficit: Ghana Maritime Authority Deploys New Batch of Cadets 👇🏼👇🏼

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) continues to make significant strides in addressing the maritime labor gap with the deployment of a new cohort of cadets Bahri Ship Management for their mandatory 12-month international sea time.

This milestone was made possible through the strategic engagements of Deputy Director General, Mubarick Masawudu, with Bahri officials during the 2026 African Maritime Security Conference in Addis Ababa.

This deployment serves as a vital bridge between academic theory and the high-stakes reality of vessel operations, ensuring the cadets meet the standards set by the International Maritime Organization as a final step to earn their Certificate of Competency (CoC).

The Director General Dr Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt Rtd) emphasised that these results are driven by passion and synergy.

To ensure the future of Ghanaian seafarers, the Authority is exploring the establishment of a dedicated Seafarer Development Fund to provide sustainable financial support for training.
