Meet our new Intern, Olimpia Ligarotti!

A Leiden University student of the bachelor of International Studies and the Outreach and Partnerships Associate at NGO DEI, an arts and culture organisation based in The Hague, Olimpia is joining us as an exchange intern to facilitate collaboration between TSSR and the NGO.

This opportunity is particularly dear to her due to her long-standing interest in Georgia’s political situation, which she developed starting 2024 when she learned about the mass protests for European accession and against the Transparency on Foreign Influence law. In fact, she chose Georgia’s autocratization process as the topic of her Politics course’s term paper.

Hence, she is now looking forward to further deepen her understanding of the country’s democratic backsliding through our research programme, as well as to actively lend a hand in solidarity to Georgia’s civic society by helping with our community events and outreach efforts.

On the 17th of July we had the pleasure of hosting an Artist Talk by Loretta Lau, a Hongkonger Performance Artist and Director of NGO DEI, an arts and culture organisation based in The Hague, Netherlands that strives to promote justice, democracy and human rights through politically and socially engaged art.

Our collaboration had started online about six months ago, until we initiated an exchange internship programme between our organisations and invited NGO DEI’s team to visit our Research Centre and Library in Tbilisi.

After Director Lau’s inspiring talk, followed a lovely open discussion between the members of our two organisations. It became apparent that there’s solid ground for future shared projects given how much we have in common, from our civic society missions to the fact that both Georgia and Hong Kong have been theaters of the rising global trend of conflict between democratic and autocratic forces.

Meet Zura Mchedlishvili, TSSR's art director and the creative force behind our workshop space.

We're excited to share a glimpse of his series "Schism", six compositions built from twelve interlocking particles, exploring power, greed, obsession, and control.

Each painting captures a moment of violent rupture: shattered fragments of stone, machinery, and technology frozen mid-collapse. Blurred motion trails and fragmented forms pull from Futurist painting and film noir alike, while currency and digital imagery ground the work firmly in our own contemporary vices.

The figures are stylized and satirical, elongated limbs, exaggerated muscle, sculpted through shadow and highlight. A restricted, cool-toned palette gives the whole series an eerie stillness, like watching a collapse unfold in slow motion.

At TSSR, our workshop space is designed to support exactly this kind of work, giving artists the room, tools, and materials to experiment freely. Zura's practice is a perfect example of what that space makes possible.

Inspired by the 2019 anti-extradition movement, Loretta turned her own body into a medium of resistance, famously shaving her head in Prague in tribute to Liu Xiaobo and the students lost in the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. In 2021 she founded NGO DEI in The Hague — its name meaning "We/Our Land" in Cantonese — built on the principle "Where Hongkongers are, there is Hong Kong."

We'll begin by exploring what NGO DEI is and its work today, then dive into the potential collaboration between NGO DEI and TSSR. Come hear how contemporary art became a powerful tool for political engagement, memory preservation, and human rights advocacy.

Meet our new intern, Ambre Trollier from Sciences Po Aix!

As a student of political science and international relations, Ambre is particularly interested in the dynamics of cooperation between the European Union and Georgia, European foreign policy, and the ways in which history is mobilized in political discourse. Her research also explores how historical narratives, as well as historical facts and realities, are used to shape and influence perceptions of Georgian identity, both national and European. This topic is also at the heart of her master’s thesis research. With the ambition of pursuing a career in diplomacy, she is eager to deepen her understanding of the political and geopolitical challenges shaping Georgia’s future.

Building on this academic interest, Ambre has chosen to extend her stay in Georgia after spending five months studying at Tbilisi State University (TSU). This experience allows her to move beyond a theoretical approach and gain first-hand insight into Georgia’s political landscape and the complex relations between Georgia, the EU, and its regional environment.
