Doncaster Reform Contradiction: The Reversal That Risks Jobs ✈️🛑
I continue to look for reform stories up and down the land. This is a cracker.
A tale of two policies: where does Reform UK actually stand on Doncaster Sheffield Airport? 📉
In May 2025, Reform UK candidates stood on doorsteps across Doncaster promising a fresh start for the airport. Their campaign was built on the idea that reopening the site was a common sense priority for the local economy. This message helped the party secure a significant majority of 37 seats on the council. 🗳️
However, less than a year later, the situation in the council chamber looks very different. 🏛️
On 2 April 2026, the Reform UK leadership announced they intend to rescind a 57 million pound loan that was previously approved to facilitate the reopening. Deputy Leader Jason Charity told the council that the party no longer supports the funding decision made in November 2025, citing concerns over lease terms and a desire to avoid writing a blank cheque with taxpayer money. ✍️🚫
Reform’s Policy Reversal Risks Doncaster Jobs 📉
If this funding is pulled at the extraordinary meeting on 11 May, the consequences for employment in the region are severe:
* Recruitment Under Threat: Vital senior roles already being advertised to manage the reopening would likely be cancelled.
* Thousands of Jobs at Risk: Local experts have warned that a fully operational airport is vital for the region. Without this loan, the project is at risk of being terminated entirely, potentially costing thousands of future jobs.
* Business Confidence Hit: Campaigners warn that this U-turn is creating confusion and damaging the confidence needed to attract private investment.
This creates a significant political contradiction. While the party still claims to support the airport in principle, the Mayor and local experts have warned that blocking this specific funding could effectively kill the project. ⚠️
If there is this level of reversal in the City of Doncaster Council, just think what havoc they could bring to the Senedd. As we approach the Welsh elections, voters must consider whether a party that performs such dramatic U-turns on vital infrastructure can be trusted with national governance. 🏴
Potential Senedd Fallout 🏴
The chaos in Doncaster serves as a warning for Wales. If Reform UK can paralyse a major airport project after promising to save it, their presence in the Senedd could lead to:
* Infrastructure Deadlock: Major Welsh transport and energy projects could be halted mid-way if the party decides to pull the financial plug.
* Economic Instability: Business investors require consistency, and a "Doncaster-style" reversal would make Wales a high-risk zone for the very companies we need to provide high-quality jobs.
* Governance by Grievance: Decisions based on blocking previous agreements rather than delivering new solutions could leave the Welsh economy in a state of permanent paralysis.
Given the Welsh Government invests in Cardiff Airport, what do you think will happen to it?
