🍟 Happy National Fish & Chip Day! 🐟

Mr Chippy York is a much-loved York takeaway, but its broadband connection had long been a source of frustration. Located in the heart of the city centre, the business experienced slow speeds, lag and drop-outs that made day-to-day operations more difficult than they needed to be.

When the pandemic struck in 2020, those challenges became even more apparent. Like many businesses, Mr Chippy became increasingly reliant on digital technology, from point-of-sale and card payments to online ordering. Its old broadband connection struggled to keep up.

Since upgrading to Full Fibre, the business has been able to support the technology it depends on every day, helping staff process orders, manage payments and serve customers more efficiently.

As more businesses embrace digital tools, reliable Full Fibre connectivity is becoming an essential ingredient for success, helping businesses operate smarter and make the most of opportunities online.

We expect Mr Chippy to be busy this ! 🍟

Today is World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 📡

This year’s theme is , “Strengthening resilience in a connected world”. It’s a reminder of how much our communities rely on the digital systems that keep everyday life moving.

Building a more resilient digital city starts locally, with the networks and tools we all depend on. From new Full Fibre builds to 5G, we are continuing efforts to improve digital resilience and inclusion across York.

York’s connectivity landscape plays a quiet but essential role in daily resilience:

• helping people stay connected
• supporting businesses to operate smoothly
• keeping vital services running behind the scenes

Reliable connectivity underpins everything from home working to streaming services, and this is why we continue working with network partners to extend this vital infrastructure to areas needing stronger access to digital.

🎉 Happy Workaversary! 🎉

This spring marks Linz’s 11th year at City of York Council – and she continues to play a key role in making Digital York what it is today.

A big part of her work involves supporting voucher funding, which forms part of the ongoing work to bring Full Fibre to areas still waiting for better connectivity, as part of the wider Project Gigabit rollout.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Linz celebration without a mention of her Cockapoo, Ricky 🐾. He’s currently taking it easy after a recent injury, but we hope he’ll be back to his usual adventures soon! 💛

Recent Ofcom figures show that nearly eight in ten UK homes now have access to Full Fibre broadband. Here in York, Full Fibre coverage is estimated to be around 86% – and no, this isn’t an April Fool!

With around a fifth of the country still waiting for Full Fibre, every newly upgraded area creates opportunities for households and businesses to do more online – from remote working and digital learning to accessing day-to-day services.

This is why Digital York continues to play a vital role in supporting the rollout locally, helping more residents, businesses and community groups benefit from fast, reliable connectivity.

Project Gigabit is now targeting those final underserved pockets, including some of York’s harder-to-reach areas. The places still waiting for Full Fibre are what we often refer to as NOT SPOTs.

Do you know a location in York that still feels underserved? Send us a message with a few details so we can follow it up!

Love is in the air 🥰

Mr Chippy York on Church Street is one of many York businesses that once struggled with slow, unreliable internet. Their connection affected everything from point-of-sale systems to CCTV, staff systems and online orders, making it difficult to keep things running smoothly.

Back in 2020, they moved to a Full Fibre connection, and it turned out to be a perfect pairing. The more reliable service has helped them manage busy periods, support online delivery and keep everyday systems working as they should. The owner says the improved connection even enabled them to introduce online delivery during the pandemic, which has since become a major part of their business.

Since upgrading, they’ve seen improvements in:
🍟 smoother day-to-day service
⚡ faster, more reliable digital systems
📈 better support for online orders and tools

A true love story between a local favourite and a connection that finally keeps up ❤️

For Safer Internet Day 2026, the UK Safer Internet Centre and Nominet have released new research shining a light on young people’s experiences and attitudes towards AI.

The insights highlight how quickly AI is becoming part of everyday life, and why it’s so important that we continue listening to young people and supporting them to navigate these changes confidently.

We’re proud to support this work and encourage our people, partners, and wider community to read and share the findings.

✨ Case study spotlight ✨

Until recently, Full Fibre broadband in Walmgate was one of York’s best-kept secrets. Now businesses like Lounge 46 are enjoying the benefits of faster, more reliable connectivity.

Lounge 46 York is a coffee shop and cocktail bar where people can drop in for coffee and cake during the day or enjoy cocktails before or after dinner nearby. From the beginning, the aim was to create a relaxed, well-connected place where customers felt comfortable staying a while.

That experience was hard to deliver on the old copper network. Wi-Fi slowed down whenever several customers tried to connect at once. Complaints were frequent, and the owner knew that if the Wi-Fi didn’t work, people simply wouldn’t return.

Since upgrading to Full Fibre, the difference has been clear:

☕ customers can connect quickly and reliably, even during busy periods
📶 multiple users can log on at once without issues
😊 improved customer experience helps support repeat visits

As the owner puts it:
“Now we’ve got happy customers. It’s worth the cost just to avoid the headache of complaints.”

✨ Case study spotlight ✨

RM English Estate Agents recently shared how upgrading their York office to Full Fibre broadband has transformed the way their team works.

Their business relies heavily on cloud systems, digital communication and online file-sharing, but until recently they were operating on a traditional copper connection with speeds of around 25 Mbps. Uploading property images took far too long, online tools lagged and everyday tasks dragged. These slow speeds created bottlenecks across the team and held back productivity.

Since moving to Full Fibre, the York office now runs on a 500 Mbps line and has experienced:

🏡 quicker uploads of property photos
⚡ smoother access to cloud-based systems and shared files
📈 fewer delays and a more efficient workflow across the team

The stronger connection has also benefited the owner and management team, who are seeing smoother operations and happier staff.
