♻️ Good news, York! From 31 March, you’ll be able to recycle even more at the kerbside.
All non‑black, recyclable PET or PP plastic plant pots can now go in your kerbside recycling. This update helps reduce plastic waste and makes recycling more consistent and easier for everyone.
This change is part of York’s early adoption of Simpler Recycling reforms, which aim to standardise recycling across England. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/simpler-recycling-in-england-policy-update/simpler-recycling-in-england-policy-update
Last year, we expanded kerbside recycling so residents can now place food and drink cartons (Tetra Paks) and toothpaste tubes in the same container as glass, plastics and tins - an upgrade introduced ahead of the national deadline.
Cllr Jenny Kent [pictured] Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency, says:
“This is a fantastic step forward for York.” Adding items like food and drink cartons and plastic plant pots at kerbside helps cut waste and boosts the city’s sustainability efforts.
Food Waste Update:
City of York Council has been granted a transitional arrangement by Defra, meaning separate household food waste collections are not required until our current waste disposal contract ends in 2043 at Allerton Waste Recovery Park.
In the meantime, we’ll continue to explore ways to improve food waste recycling. Food waste placed in general waste is already being removed where possible and recycled through anaerobic digestion.
