Who else is loving Rivals? 🙋‍♀️

The show is all about scandals in 80s Britian, but some of the real life scandals during the Cold War were much more shocking than anything happening in Rutshire!

One of the most famous of these scandals was the Profumo Affair in the 1960s which shocked everyone, as model Christine Keeler was discovered to have been having an affair with both the British War Minister, John Profumo, and the Russian naval attaché and spy, Yevgeny Ivanov!

The espinoage of the Cold War is fascinating, and the scandals associated with it have fascinated people for decades. Rivals focuses on the Thatcher years- which Cold War scandals and decades would you choose to have a TV show focused on?

Today is the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The Royal Observer Corps were involved in this heroic group of Allied landings in Normandy and the beginnings of the liberation of France. A group of Royal Observer Corps members, known as Seaborne Observers, were supplied to ships to attempt to reduce the friendly fire that was common between allied vessels and allied aircraft.

D-Day was the beginning of Operation Overlord, and 11 months after it, the allies had secured victory against the fascistic European regimes. Today we remember and honour the brave men and women who laid down their lives to liberate Europe.

Reportedly the observers at 20 Group also enjoyed a drink, and created a shortcut to the nearest pub (The Carlton Tavern), through a hedge so they could get there quickly after training exercises! If you are in the pub this afternoon, why not raise a glass to the observers. 🍻

What would happen if there was a fire at York Cold War Bunker? 🔥

We have a really interesting fire safety mechanism in our generator room. This is the room in which fires would be most likely to start, due to the large amount of fuel. Above the generator, we have a thin metal wire: if a fire starts, that will snap, bringing the door to the room slamming shut, and stopping oxygen from getting in.

Simultaneously, weights will fall on the cans of CO2 we have upstairs, flooding the room with carbon dioxide, and hopefully killing the fire!
