We don't do drama here, but this is worth addressing as it's popular press clickbait at the moment
I can't read the article as it's stuck behind a paywall (I ain't paying a penny to The Sun!) but I do know that The Wizard Walk of York and WizardFest 2026 - York’s Festival of Wizardry are mentioned so here goes...
✨ There is only ONE actual Harry Potter shop on Shambles, York - The Shop That Must Not Be Named - despite articles, and some locals, claiming it's a street full of them!
✨ We aren't a Harry Potter tour, and never make any claims that York has anything to do with it. There are no filming locations (not even the train station - another myth) and it wasn't JK Rowling's inspiration. But York IS popular with magic fans, and the theme suits the winding alleys and cobbled streets.
✨ Our tours don't go up or down Shambles, we've no interest in battling through the crowds with a big crowd of our own!
✨ I've heard some locals say wizardry is a fad that will disappear soon, but it's been going strong for almost 30 years. There's a new ten-year TV series coming out soon too, which will bring a whole new generation of fans
✨ Many local businesses and families love the theme. We're big on supporting 'local' and work closely with many shops and attractions to conjure up new magical partnerships!
✨ Wizardry doesn't replace history, all of York's rich history is still out there for anyone to find. There are countless museums, trails and historical tours...wizardry just gives families another option
✨ Not everything in York needs to be about history or heritage. Wizardry drives tourism to York, creates jobs, boosts the local economy and offers families something else, something different, and something magical!
..as for adults in fancy dress, we're all about people embracing what they enjoy and finding the FUN in life. I've even been known to dress as a wizard myself occasionally (!)
Long live the MAGIC, the world needs more of it 🪄
