This week, the three of us attended York’s Annual Lord Mayor Making Ceremony at the Guildhall.

There’s definitely plenty of pomp and tradition involved, but it’s also one of those events that really reflects the history and character of our city. York has centuries of civic history and you can really feel that during the ceremony.

A huge thank you to the outgoing Lord Mayor, Cllr Martin Rowley BEM, and the Lady Mayoress Elizabeth Rowley and Sheriff Paul Doughty, his consort David Smith for everything they’ve done over the past year supporting charities, community groups and events across York. Over the last year, they raised money and awareness for Family Matters York, the Royal British Legion and York Against Cancer, supporting people and families across our city.

And congratulations to the incoming Civic Party as they begin their year representing York, including the new Lord Mayor, Cllr Margaret Wells, Lord Mayor’s Consort Trevor Gant, Sheriff Geoff Cossins and Sheriff’s Consort Stuart Jarman.

This year, the Civic Party will be supporting York Cares and Shared York CIC through their charity fundraising and community work across the city. ❤️

🌿 Do YOU want to help out in our park? 🌿

Our wonderful volunteers are out in Hull Road Park every week, looking after the green spaces we all enjoy. From gardening and growing to woodworking and wildlife projects, there’s something for everyone to get involved in.

You don’t need any experience and you don’t need to book. Just turn up, lend a hand, and be part of a really friendly community effort. Tools and refreshments are provided too.

We’re proud that this Labour council is also investing £100,000 into Hull Road Park, making sure it continues to improve for residents now and in the future.

If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, this is a great place to start. Come along and see what it’s all about 🌱

What can you get done in 90 minutes? Quite a lot, as it turns out 👀

We were out in Badger Hill yesterday with the brilliant Badger Hill Community Group and City of York Council’s neighbourhood caretakers and picked up 30 actions across the area.

From everyday issues such as grass cutting to longer standing concerns about overgrown hedges, it was a really productive walkabout and a great example of partnership working in action 💪

The neighbourhood team will be back week commencing 18th May to get these sorted.

If there’s something you’d like us to take a look at next time, drop it in the comments👇

📍There are proposals on the table that would see big changes to Hull Road Ward as we know it!

Under the draft plans, our area would be (just about) split between two new wards, Tang Hall & Derwenthorpe and Heslington & University. That’s a pretty big shift, and it could change how our community is represented going forward.

Just to be clear, this does not change the overall boundary of the City of York. It is about how areas within the city are grouped into wards and represented.

Now, we know ward boundaries are not exactly something most people think about day to day…..!

It is more about your street, your neighbours, and the community you are part of. But these changes do shape how those communities are represented at the council.

Our communities have strong identities, and it is important that any new boundaries reflect the real communities that exist here, not just lines on a map.🗺️

Nothing is final yet. The consultation is open until 6 July, so please do have your say.

If you live, work or study here, make sure your voice is heard 👇

We made the most of the sunshine this afternoon with a wander around Temple Ave ☀️

Always nice to catch people at home for a chat about any issues they have or ideas for the community.

Huge thanks to all those who chatted to us and for Rachael Maskell for joining too!

Great to spot some of the Easter holiday activities going on in the park too.

Get in contact if we can help you 📧!

Over many months, we’ve spoken to lots of residents across Hull Road, and one issue keeps coming up again and again – anti-social behaviour is a real problem.

If you’ve experienced this, please know you’re not the only one feeling frustrated or concerned.
Everyone deserves to feel safe where they live. 🏡

We are already working with North Yorkshire Police - York and Jo Coles to make sure these concerns are taken seriously and action is being taken. 👮‍♂️

The police are holding a community meeting at the Eco Centre on Saturday 11th April, between 11am and 2pm, and we’ll be there!

If you can make it along, we’d really encourage you to come and have a chat with us. It’s a good opportunity to share your experiences, raise concerns, and hear more about what’s being done to tackle ASB. 💬

☀️📬 Sunshine and good news in Badger Hill this week as we were out delivering our latest newsletter!

Really pleased to share that free school breakfasts are coming to Osbaldwick, Tang Hall and St Lawrence’s Primary School 🥣 – a simple change that will make a real difference for families and help children start the day ready to learn 📚

Lovely to be out chatting to residents. And after plenty of steps, we nipped to The Black Bull for a well-deserved pint in the sun🍺🌞
