York Conservative Council Group Leader reacts to the new Prime Minister

Cllr Chris Steward said ‘Whilst I don’t believe a change of Prime Minister should necessitate a General Election when the Conservatives changed leader all key Labour people – especially Andy Burnham – were adamant that there should be one. There is therefore a huge stink of hypocrisy about Burnham’s arrival, in fact of record levels given he was not even an MP at the time of the General Election.

‘Whilst Burnham comes across as a decent bloke this surely is not a sufficient quality to become Prime Minister – even by the Labour Party’s standards of deciding after they ousted Keir Starmer that none of their more than 400 MPs were fit to be leader and their consistent refusal to pick a woman for the role. Burnham is, rightly, proud of his northern roots, but again this simply narrows the would be pool of candidates down to the many millions. We need real a mandate, talent, experience and a plan for a Prime Minister, now more than ever.

‘Burnham is only coming to power because of the disgrace of Keir Starmer who hiked taxes to record levels, released the most seriously offending prisoners early, called people concerned about murders far right, destroyed the education prospects of thousands of children, attacked farmers, has failed to deliver new homes and damaged the UK’s reputation on the world stage.

‘I hope Burnam will succeed as it truly matters for the country but is very hard to see what he really stands for. He is keen to be a ‘new face’ against the establishment but has a long past as an MP and was a weak Culture and Health Secretary. When going for leader in the past he fell well behind the woeful Ed Milliband and then Jeremy Corbyn, hardly a high bar. Whilst he has been a popular mayor of Manchester he is leaving the region with eyewatering debt and the success he has enjoyed has been largely due to successive governments putting Manchester at the pinnacle of a devolution experiment which resulted in huge government money flowing in.

‘The Labour Party is badly divided, in many ways several parties within one party. It remains to be seen whether simply being northern and wearing t-shirts is enough to keep his MPs happy. Certainly financial markets and residents need a lot more convincing and he needs a good team around him – which does not look to be happening.

Cllr Steward concluded ‘Here in York we have seen a huge number of press releases from the Labour council, MPs, mayor and government about the likes of York Central, the dualling of the A1237 and Haxby Station but delivery has been generally lacking. The council is also subject to a shocking government funding settlement which is the worst in history and Labour has been continually hiking council tax by the maximum legally allowed. We have Labour politicians at every level of our government, there really are no excuses now and the time to deliver, but that has been the case for two years already and instead they are just doing damage’.

York’s Conservative councillors have continued to criticise Labour requiring residents to pre book a time slot at the tip, as three months in the council has released a heavily spun media document congratulating itself.

The council says there has been ‘strong resident satisfaction’ and quote 71% of people as being very satisfied, however a trip to the tip is not like a holiday – all people want to do is drop off their waste and it is incredible that nearly 30% of responders are not as happy as they could be with this basic service. The introduction of the booking system looks like yet another way for the council to make things easier for the council rather than for residents.

Conservative councillor Mike Nicholls said:

"We continue to believe that the tip booking system does not make sense and we would reverse it. Without the booking system there would inevitably be some queues at busy times but this is true in many areas. People know when the busy times are and can avoid them, rather than having to take the trouble to plan their busy lives around something so trivial as when they get rid of waste."

City of York Conservative Group has criticised Labour’s plan to push ahead with a trial closure for cars in much of the areas around Rougier Street. The trial is being done using part of the Bus Service Improvement Programme money which was provided by the government in 2022 and Labour is set to sign it off at next week’s Executive.

Commenting on the proposals Conservative Group Leader Chris Steward said ‘When the proposals for the effective closure of many Rougier Street area routes to cars was proposed, we said we would look at it with an open mind, however the tangible detail on how improvements will happen has always been promised by Labour but never delivered. To make this blow to car drivers work we need a genuine partnership with bus companies for their side of the deal with a commitment to more services and on punctuality, yet Labour has not managed to secure any such thing’

As ever from the political group that brought the city the Lendal Bridge closure, it is far from simple but detailed below:

• A bus lane on George Hudson Street: private cars would not be able to use the southbound section of George Hudson Street beyond Tanner Row during hours of bus lane operation. Any driver travelling wanting to access the Micklegate area from Station Road would need to turn right on to Tanner Row, complete a loop down Micklegate and exit back on to George Hudson Street northbound

• A bus gate in both directions on the eastern end of Micklegate (the stretch from George Hudson Street to the North St / Skeldergate traffic lights): private cars would not be able to use this stretch of road during hours of bus gate operation.

• Micklegate from Micklegate Bar to the junction with George Hudson Street would become one way with private cars only able to use the street going eastbound (away from the Bar), and only allowed to turn left onto George Hudson Street

Cllr Chris Steward further added: ‘Having gone to consultation, the reaction of York residents is at best unenthusiastic and at worst in opposition with an incredible 41.5% of them not believing that the scheme which effectively clears most of the traffic from the roads will or even may improve bus reliability.

'The Council is effectively rushing to spend Bus Service Improvement Plan money on something, rather than truly considering how it can be best spent. We want to see bus services improved in York and more people using them but unfortunately this looks like just another Labour stick to beat the motorist rather than a carrot to improve things with public transport.

'The trial is going ahead with no metrics at all on what success will look like, for example no % reduction in bus journey times. The recommendation to the Executive is clear that it is just for a trial and it is vital that is what it should be – and without a notable improvement in bus journeys the trial should be aborted’.
