A scene of yesteryear on the Ouse Bridge in York

A traffic jammed Ouse Bridge in York

Daniel Defoe, in his Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain described the original as ‘near 70 foot in diameter; it is, without exception, the greatest in England, some say it’s as large as the Rialto at Venice, though I think not.’

There were about fifty shops, a prison or kidcote, a town hall and a hospital on the bridge and from 1367 England ’s first public toilets are reputed to have opened here (issuing into the river): ‘the place on Owsbridge callyd the pyssing howes’. Agnes Gretehede was paid two shillings a year to keep them clean in 1544.

The present Ouse Bridge was built between 1810 and 1821.
