Our regular volunteers were out again today on the Northern Spur, continuing the removal of wild mustard. They scaled the Ramparts to tackle a large area, making a noticeable difference by the end of the day.

The vibrant Musk thistles growing on the northern spur have been hotspots for bumblebees lately! Here are some buff/white-tailed female worker bees feeding on the rich nectar sources. A single flower head has hundreds of tiny florets, so bees can collect nectar happily without expending lots of energy flying between different plants.

The UK is home to 24 species of bumblebee, 1 honeybee species and over 240 species of solitary bees. They are vital pollinators as they are notoriously “messy” eaters and disperse pollen which sticks to their bodies between different plants. Social bees also compact pollen into ‘pollen baskets’ on their hind legs to take back to feed their colony 🐝

💚 Celebrating Our Volunteers – National Volunteer Week 💚

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who make Ham Hill such a special place ✨

More than 90 amazing volunteers give their time, energy and passion to Ham Hill, supporting everything from conservation and drystone walling to wildlife surveys, community activities, ranger work and our Visitor Centre 🌿

Together, their impact is truly inspiring:
🌟 In the last 3 years they’ve given an incredible 21,368 hours - worth £384,590 in volunteer time
🌟 This also means 163% of the volunteer target for the Heritage Fund project has already been reached, with 2 years still to go

But beyond the numbers, it’s the people who make volunteering at Ham Hill so special. Our volunteers are a friendly group who bring enthusiasm, dedication and a real sense of camaraderie—supporting each other while making a lasting difference 💫 👏 This National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to celebrate every single one of them and everything they do.
