Montacute House was built in the late 16th century for Sir Edward Phelips. There are many Renaissance features and the Long Gallery, the longest of its kind in England. Montacute's formal gardens are perfect for a stroll and include a collection of roses, mixed borders and famous wibbly wobbly hedges. Waymarked walks lead around the wider estate, which encompasses St Michael's Hill. We endeavour t

🎬 Step into 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 at Montacute House

The wait is over – Paramount Pictures 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 is in UK cinemas from today (5 June 2026). And there’s a familiar star stealing scenes alongside the cast… Montacute House 🌟

This iconic Elizabethan house provides the dramatic backdrop to this darkly satirical story of ambition, power, and excess. Themes of status and influence lie at the heart of the film — concepts that echo through Montacute’s own history as a bold statement of success and prestige when it was built over 400 years ago.

Montacute House is no stranger to the spotlight, with appearances in 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘞𝘰𝘭𝘧 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘭 and more.

The garden team have been busy planting, with over 300 annuals planted last week alone! To support the new plants, they’ve been putting used coffee grounds from the café to good use. The grounds help slow down slugs and snails, improve soil structure, and even act as a gentle slow release fertiliser. Plus, it’s a brilliant bit of recycling ♻
Why not give it a try in your garden? The used coffee grounds don’t need to be dry, but shouldn’t be too wet. Spread around your plant with about half an inch of thickness and repeat every three to four weeks ☕

Saving the Staircases – project update 🪵

We’ve had another exciting delivery at Montacute House—this time, it’s oak.

This timber will play a key role in the next stage of the project, forming bespoke protective coverings for every step and landing on both the North and South Staircases. Expertly crafted by the National Trust’s South West Specialist Craft team, these coverings will help safeguard the historic stone, preventing further wear for future generations to enjoy.

Each piece will be entirely unique—just like the staircases themselves—with 22 landings and 104 treads, all slightly different in size and shape.

Even better, the oak has its own story. It comes from the National Trust’s Brockhampton Estate in Herefordshire, where it was sustainably felled as part of countryside management. After three years of air drying and careful kiln conditioning, it’s now acclimatising to Montacute House’s interior before being transformed into these beautiful, practical additions.

Work has begun on the cut flower border as the team prepares for a full realignment of the beds. Over the next few weeks, the gardeners will be putting in permanent straight edges and re establishing the layout with a level of accuracy we haven’t seen here in quite some time.
The new design takes its cue from Montacute House itself: the planting lines will echo the diamond shapes in the windows, bringing a lovely connection between the garden and the architecture.
This is just the beginning – we’ll share more as the work progresses. Or even better, come and see the transformation for yourself.
