Stephen ‘Shiner’ Wright unbuckled his winch and hung up his helmet for the last time a few years ago, but vivid memories of a career dedicated to saving lives endure.
Stephen spent time in every role aboard a rescue helicopter in a search and rescue career spanning decades, first as a Rescue Diver, then as Advanced Resus Winchman, Winch Operator, and finally as a Rescue Helicopter Pilot.
We caught up with the man who was presented with the first Billy Deacon Award in 2002 to learn about his experiences in the sky with HM Coastguard.
Stephen says: "It's no secret that those working in SAR are often scared too, but we're trained to run towards the danger. What compels us is that people rely upon us, and the fear that if we aren't there, someone could die."
