Did you know that 84% of accidental drowning fatalities in 2024 were male?

The strength of the sea can easily catch you off guard. Remember, anyone can drown but no one should.

If someone is in trouble, do not try to help them yourself, even if you consider yourself a strong swimmer. Instead, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Making note of your location and any nearby landmarks is crucial when visiting the coast. This will help you to avoid panicking and ensure faster response times from HM Coastguard in the event of an emergency.

Being aware of your surroundings can make the difference between a quick, efficient rescue and a prolonged search for your location.

If you're in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Groynes can be found at many beaches around the UK and are designed to slow down coastal erosion.

They are not to be climbed on. It is very easy to slip and injure yourself or become trapped, which can be exceptionally dangerous especially when the tide is coming in.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stephen ‘Shiner’ Wright unbuckled his winch and hung up his helmet for the last time a few years ago, but vivid memories of a career dedicated to saving lives endure.

Stephen spent time in every role aboard a rescue helicopter in a search and rescue career spanning decades, first as a Rescue Diver, then as Advanced Resus Winchman, Winch Operator, and finally as a Rescue Helicopter Pilot.

We caught up with the man who was presented with the first Billy Deacon Award in 2002 to learn about his experiences in the sky with HM Coastguard.

Stephen says: "It's no secret that those working in SAR are often scared too, but we're trained to run towards the danger. What compels us is that people rely upon us, and the fear that if we aren't there, someone could die."
