It is all kicking off now with the warm weather. Look out for all sorts of dragonflies ovipositing, laying eggs by the female dipping the tip of her abdomen into the water. Here a sequence shot of a female broad bodied chaser coming into do this. Enjoy the sights of summer!

We are grateful to Dave Hammant for this amazing shot of a female Black Tailed Skimmer ovipositing.

On Saturday's successful Dragonfly and Insect walk, we had several flybys by a Lesser Emperor. New to Moor Green Lakes a couple of years ago, it is now a staple of early summer. Thanks to Dave Hammant (https://www.djhimages.co.uk/) for a great photograph.

For Demoiselle dragonfly data enthusiasts everywhere, we have been counting the Demoiselles along the river Blackwater at Moor Green regularly for many years. The three 2026 counts ( red line are higher than last year ( grey line) and the average over several years.( blue line). This might also be a function of them displaying more in the hot weather, but clearly they are doing well. Enjoy them !

The cold snap yesterday has suppressed the numbers of dragonflies flying at Moor Green. This comes after another early Spring with high numbers at the end of April. But if you look closely you might find them hiding in long grass and find they are even cold enough to carefully pick up and appreciate close up. Redeyed Damselfly

Seen at Moor Green on Thursday was the Hairy Dragonfly. This species has recovered significantly in the past few decades, for reasons unknown but maybe due to reductions in pesticides from agriculture. It is still underreported is seems as it is not really a sit still and be photographed species , so please look out for it.

Just to mention the the demoiselle damselflies are back on the river in large numbers with the early hot spell. Enjoy!

On Saturday 11th April Colebrook Hide will be open between 10 am and 4 pm. Experienced MGLG members will be on hand to point out things of interest to see from the hide and to provide information on what else to look out for around the reserve. Come along to enjoy the spring spectacle and to learn about all the wildlife (bird, insects, reptiles, mammals, plants) that can be found at the Moor Green Lakes reserve. Free entry.

Every year, under license, the nest boxes at Moor Green are monitored, providing valuable long term data on the state of British wildlife. Blue t**s are currently sitting on eggs- no chicks quite yet. This gives us a rare chance to see just how beautiful blue t**s are closeup. Please do not disturb nesting birds- you can see even with the care this box was approached, the "go-away" look in the bird.
