Hedgehog rescue Bristol and South Gloucestershire

Hedgehog rescue Bristol and South Gloucestershire Hedgehog Rescue is a voluntary organisation that cares for sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs in Bristol and surrounding area. Call ‭01584 890801‬

Please do not leave messages about sick hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are now on the endangered list as there numbers have decreased rapidly over the last 30 years. You can help by taking care with your garden tools, check long grass before strimming, make sure hedgehogs are not in your compost heap before you turn it, check wood piles before lighting, do not use insecticides as you are killing their food

source, netting and football nets trap hedgehogs so please put them away at night, some councils now use netting for recycling boxes these are also causing hedgehogs to get trapped, please make sure the netting is kept inside or over the box, not left dangling outside. Leave an area of garden wild encouraging insects and natural habitat for the hedgehogs. Put your dog on a lead before letting it out in the evening so you can control your dog if a hedgehog is also in the garden at the same time.

And so the first rescue since opening, a drive to fishponds after work, and on to the vets.
Hedgehog caught up in a football net. Limping on front leg and fly eggs on its face.
No idea of the outcome just yet….

Hoorah, we can finally reopen, it’s been a difficult time for our volunteers and those needing our help.
Thanks to all the volunteers who have donned their rubber gloves and scrubbed every inch of our hospitals.

Please don’t all rush with your newspaper donations, as we had lots left even after asking for them not to be.
They are a fire risk if we have too many here.

I want to thank Wild hogs, Help a hog, Portishead Hedgehog Rescue who have taken on the hedgehogs we would have cared for during this time.
Also the public who had to drive further afield to do this.

The next few days will see the outside of the hospital spruced up too, as it needs a good coat of paint to help preserve it.
Well done and thank you to all those involved 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Anthony Head. He was a great advocate for animals along with his wife Sarah.
I met Anthony after doing a radio interview, such a kind and warm man

Diddier having his daily swim 🦔

Diddier sadly came in with nerve damage on one of his front and back legs. We’ve been giving him anti inflammatory and pain medication, along with five minutes of hydro therapy every day.

After a lot of care and determination, we’re happy to have seen such an improvement in Diddier’s mobility already!

Say hello to Maximus 🦔

Little Maximus only weighed 134g when he was found stuck in a gulley. After being separated from his family, he was dehydrated and had internal parasites and lungworm.

After receiving treatment, care and a lot of food, Maximus was released back into the garden he was found, weighing a healthy 1kg!

This is him in his release garden 4 days after 💛
