Southern Water We monitor social media 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday for billing queries, and 24/7 for everything else.

Social media guidelines

We created our social media channels for a wide audience, to provide help, support, information and ideas. They’re monitored by us and we’re committed to responding in a timely manner to constructive and relevant comments and queries on our channels. Our social media channels are open public forums, and we welcome lively debate - opinions, questions and suggestions. We ask everyone to post in a respectful manner in line with our guidelines. If they don’t, we reserve the right to delete or hide any comment that goes against them. Here are our guidelines:

• Do not post misleading, inaccurate or false information, or links to pages containing misleading, inaccurate or false content.
• Please keep posts friendly and avoid using offensive or abusive language and pictures. This includes swear words, variations of swear words, links to harmful pages, and repeated posts.
• Please do not personally attack our employees or any other member of the public commenting on our page.
• We do not allow comments or posts that disclose information about our employees.
• Your comment is your own. It is your own responsibility to take care of your confidentiality and when sharing sensitive information, please do so via private message.

We’re proud to support Water Night, the UK’s annual water awareness event happening today, bringing households, schools, workplaces and communities together to pause their taps and think differently about water.

Join thousands of people taking part as households across the UK will pause their taps from 5–10pm and take a closer look at how often water is part of everyday life. This year’s theme, Tap Pause Level Up, is about creating a moment of pause from our routines so we can level up how we value water, what we know about it and the habits that shape our water future.

We’re proud to share that our Beyond the Drain educational tours at Peacehaven and Budds Farm Wastewater treatment centres have achieved the National Autistic Society’s Neuroinclusive Access Silver Award. 🩶

The award recognises the work our education teams and site colleagues have done to remove restrictions and make visits more accessible for the neurodivergent community through clearer communication, sensory considerations, preparation resources, and tailored support.

We will continue developing visitor resources, investing in colleague awareness, and listening to feedback from neurodivergent visitors to make environmental education accessible for all.

Why don’t we just build more reservoirs?

Building new reservoirs is part of our long-term plan to help increase water storage, helping us meet the needs of a changing climate and communities. This includes funding Havant Thicket Reservoir, the first new reservoir in 30 years, which will store 8.7 billion litres of water.

Large overground reservoirs aren’t an easy fix. They can take over a decade to plan, approve, fill, and build.

So, while we continue to develop new schemes to help, reducing water use in our homes is still one of the quickest and most effective ways to help protect our future supplies. 💧

Today the Environment Agency has declared Severe Drought in Sussex after prolonged dry weather across the South.

Our teams have carefully managed water supplies throughout the challenging summer months in Sussex and Kent without the need for a hosepipe ban. We continue to work around the clock to keep taps flowing, monitoring flows and levels constantly and moving water around the network to where it’s needed most.

While there's no immediate risk to customer supplies, the prolonged dry weather has impacted some of our water sources. Bewl Water, the largest reservoir in the South East, is around 44% full and below its usual level for this time of year. Although the recent rain has been welcome, we'll need sustained rainfall through autumn and winter to help replenish reservoirs, rivers and groundwater ahead of next summer.

We’re doing everything we can to manage this through tackling leaks, investing in our network and infrastructure and working with customers and businesses to support them in reducing water usage through grants, partnerships and new online tools like our water calculator. It’s important we help protect water resources for the months ahead and use water wisely.

Our annual Ripple Effect campaign encourages Southern Water employees to take action for the environment by supporting local conservation and biodiversity projects across our region.

Now in its second year, the campaign brings people together to help protect and enhance the places that matter most to our communities. This year saw a record-breaking 518 hours volunteered, with more than 110 colleagues taking part.

Projects included supporting the conservation and habitat improvement at Parkwood Scout campsite, helping develop a new duck pond at Crimsham Farm, and supporting the Eastbourne Downland Group in maintaining and protecting chalk downland habitats.

Yesterday, we joined partners for the Kent Water Resilience Partnership, led by Kent County Council.

The event brought together water companies, regulators, local authorities, environmental organisations, businesses and farming groups, to discuss the challenges across the county and how we can work together to build greater resilience for the future.

We also shared details of our precautionary response to potential water supply disruption in Kent this year, alongside the more than £300 million investment across the county to help strengthen water supplies between now and 2030.

We're looking forward to continuing to work with partners across Kent and strengthening our collaboration in the months ahead.

In this latest Team Behind the Tap episode, we're out with our leakage team to see what it takes to find and fix leaks across our region. 💧

Finding a leak isn't always straightforward. Many are hidden underground and difficult to pinpoint. That's why our teams use a range of specialist tools and technology to track them down before repairs can begin.

From experts analysing data behind the scenes to the technicians locating leaks in the field and the crews carrying out repairs, it takes a huge team effort to help reduce water loss, protect supplies and keep taps flowing.

At this year’s Worthing Carnival, visitors got hands-on with our Blockage Buster Challenge, giving them a chance to investigate blockages first-hand. More than half of these blockages are caused by flushable items such as wet wipes and sanitary products. Wet wipes have become one of the biggest causes of sewer blockages with more than 91,000 incidents recorded between 2020 and 2025!

According to the latest estimations from our FOG and Unflushables Team, around 1 billion wet wipes are removed from our sewer network in the Southeast each year. So, with investment in our network including AI monitoring to spot issues before they cause pollutions, our dedicated blockbuster team, and small actions at home, we can help keep sewers flowing and prevent blockages.

We're continuing to restore water supplies to customers in Crawley. Your water should be returning soon, although you may experience intermittent supply or low pressure for a little while longer as the network returns to normal.

If you're still without water, bottled water is available from The Hawth Theatre, Hawth Ave, Crawley RH10 6YZ until 10pm.

It’s normal when water returns to experience air in the system, bubbles or discolouration. If the water has a brown or black colour, run your tap for a few minutes and it should clear. If this doesn't work, turn the tap off, wait 20 minutes and try again. It’s fine to use your water as normal when your water runs clear.

Sometimes after a network has been emptied air locks can occur either in our pipes or customers’ – running taps for a short while can help bring water through.

If you leave your house, or when you go to bed, please make sure that taps are switched off so that when water does return you don’t experience an accidental flood.
