High Salvington Windmill

High Salvington Windmill Working windmill in Worthing, West Sussex. Always looking for visitors and volunteers. Entrance is £1 for adults and free for accompanied minors.

High Salvington Windmill is an excellent example of a working post mill dating from 1750-70. The mill has been extensively restored and was able to restart grinding in 1991. It is open to the public for roughly 14 open days throughout the year, with free timed tours (tickets available at the gate), exhibitions, refreshments, souvenir shop and facilities. Open days are the first and third Sundays of the months April through to September, inclusive.

Visitors to the mill today were intrigued to find maintenance work under way. Our sweeps need repair and it will take a while to have them ready to turn again. Meanwhile we still have a very few 3lb bags of flour to sell. Today our annual book fair was popular. Next open day is June 21st.

The verdict on our flour from an artisan baker who really knows his flour.
"This is proper milling wheat, not random tractor-food wheat pretending to be bread flour"
And he gets a bit technical too: "The really interesting bit is the Hagberg Falling Number of 380. That’s VERY high and basically means the grain has almost no sprouting damage and really stable starch quality. "
We love to make flour when the wind blows. You may be lucky and see some in our shop soon. We never have a huge amount, and what we do have is in huge demand. It all depends on the wind conditions!
Thank you to our friendly baker for testing our flour and confirming what we already believed - our flour is great!

The Mill hosted Magic Minders today for a morning of play with their charges. (Permission was given to publish this photo by the way). The sun shone and the children enjoyed the freedom to run round our field and roly poly down the slope. If you have a group that might like a private visit please get in touch.
