What has Labour led Cumberland Council signed up to as a sanctuary council and did residents get a say?

Being a sanctuary council (Cumberland Council adopts policies to support and protect undocumented migrants or asylum seekers) can bring benefits, but it also comes with several potential downsides or challenges:

1. Financial Pressure
Providing additional services: like housing support, legal aid, translation, and social services. It can strain an already tight as advertised by the labour led council budgets, especially if central government funding doesn’t increase to match demand.

2. Political Backlash
Sanctuary policies will be controversial. Cumberland Council are facing criticism from residents, political opponents, or national government, leading to division within the community.

3. Legal Tensions
Local sanctuary policies will create conflict with national immigration laws. This can create legal uncertainty or pressure from central authorities.

4. Increased Demand on Services.
Schools, healthcare, and housing services will experience higher demand, which can stretch capacity if not properly planned and funded.

5. Public Perception Issues
Some residents may feel that resources are being prioritized for migrants over existing communities, which can lead to resentment.

An already struggling council riddled with debt and poorly managed finances have added more pressure to local services by voting this through. Residents are suffering more because of this labour led council.

Speak to your councillor and ask why they voted it through, irrelevant of what they say it was politically whipped by the labour executive. Their political image was firmly put in front of residents wishes.
