Free archaeology talk on Saturday 30 May at Stretton Sugwas Village Hall. Email [email protected] to secure your place.
Following last year’s successful archaeological excavation at NT The Weir Garden in Herefordshire, Midlands and East of England Archaeologist Viviana will deliver a public talk to share the results of the excavation, including results from specialist assessments, to volunteers, local residents and local groups in Stretton Sugwas on Saturday 30 May.
The excavation, carried out during the Festival of Archaeology in 2025, aimed to characterise the nature of a Romano-British double-ditched enclosure, first identified by aerial photography in the 1970s and later confirmed by geophysical survey at Old Weir Farm.
The project was driven by the desire to research and preserve by record a site threatened by river erosion and climate change. Equally it was designed to offer a safe and accessible place for volunteers and local groups to participate in archaeological research, contributing to the archaeological and cultural story of their community.
Viviana says “This is a special project and one that took time to plan properly because we wanted to make sure the event was specifically programmed and delivered to and for local residents, local groups and our funders who interact with this wonderful landscape daily. The historic and cultural landscapes that surround us are often challenging to read because there are no obvious clues on the ground, or because they are not accessible.
These types of events are extremely important as they give us an opportunity to tell, or remind of, forgotten, lost or untold stories of past societies and landscapes; to connect sites through research but also to connect people and places with the conservation and nature restoration work we are delivering”.
